"Where are our kids?!" That was one of the many sentences that kept repeating in the crowd. People had emerged from their houses with lanterns in the early mornings of the dawn. They didn't even bother to dress in proper clothes as they rushed to collect en masse in the town square. Men and women had gathered with faces of worry or anger. Even the children were confused as they watched their parents run around. A few kids realized that their younger siblings were gone. The air was thick with negativity and loss as the sun started to rise above the horizon.

In front of the crowd, the political leaders were rushing around, attempting to remain calm to appease the crowd. The truth was that they were in the dark like the crowd goers were. A dozen kids in counting had disappeared without a trace that very night. No one had heard or saw anything. There wasn't any evidence left behind to point out who the kidnapper could have been. There wasn't a clear motivation for why those specific children. Nothing about them aligned except for age, and the town had several other children around the same age that had been spared. It wasn't an opportune kidnapping, that was known for sure. This was deliberate and planned. What remained was why the kids were kidnapped, who kidnapped them, and where they were now. The town didn't even know if the kids were still alive. It was highly likely that at least one of them had perished already.

The sky had been clear seconds before, but dark clouds started to gather. Once the crowd had noticed the rapidly forming storm, their talking faded into fearful whispers. The clouds bathed the town in shadowy darkness. The whispers ceased altogether into silence. From the darkest point of the storm, a burst of golden lightning struck the top of the mayor's office in Town Hall. The force of the hit sent the crowd stumbling back onto their behinds. Where the lightning had struck, a woman was left behind. She was wearing a white poncho over leggings with long sleeves that covered her hands. She had a hood over her face, but anyone could see the glowing gold eyes from beneath the shadows over her face. Across the poncho were runes sown with gold thread that marked this woman as a very special type of person. She had her hand held up. She was holding a buzzing, transparent orb that was the sound of thunder. She let the thunder disperse into the sky, softening the sound that way the town didn't go deaf. She looked back down at the crowd with a smile without emotion. "I speak on behalf of the Watchers. We have found children among you gifted with magic. However, your children lack control and discipline. To protect them from themselves and to prevent them from hurting others, we have safely retrieved the children for proper training. Should they complete this training, they will be given the choice to return to you or enlist in the Watchers coven."

The crowd was filled with silence until someone yelled out. "Give us back our kids, you cultist!" This prompted the entire crowd to start screaming in outrage. The woman's eye twitched as she tried to keep her smile up. She exhaled sharply from her nose as she lifted her hand back up. She pointed it at the crowd. Her eyes started glowing brighter. A fog started to rise from the ground that obscured the people's vision. The woman dropped a potion into the mist, watching the color turn from stoney gray to a pale blue. The people of the crowd were defenseless as they wandered back to their homes with their families in tow. The woman had a real smile grace her lips as she disappeared with another flash of lightning. Without her there, the thunder boomed for miles, loud enough to reach the ears of the Watchers who were escorting the half-asleep children to their base.
