Better In My Memories

Puffy stood on the dock on the ocean with a fishing pole bobbing in the water. She was wearing a blank tank top with athletic shorts. Puffy had her rainbow corkscrew hair pulled into a low bun. She was smiling at the horizon, her visor covering her eyes in shadows to protect her from the harsh morning sun. In the water she was fishing in, Foolish was spinning around in the coral and seaweed. Sometimes he would leap out of the water like a dolphin, or let his fin cut the water like the shark he partly was. Foolish would frequently breech the surface to grin happily at Puffy, and she would give him a smile in return.

This time, however, someone else walked into the shallows of the water. It was a woman with flaming red curls that were bound tight like coils of fire. She looked over at Puffy with the brightest grin, her yellow irises staring at Puffy from the black sclera. The woman was wearing a crop top made from a shiny pinkish gray material that matched her flowing skirt. Around the woman's wrists and ankles were shimmering scales of an aquatic species. She waved at Puffy while walking towards the dock.

Foolish crawled onto the dock once he noticed that the woman was there. The woman didn't seem to mind, and wasn't revolted by Foolish's odd appearance. The woman leaned against the wooden dock without getting on it. With the close proximity, Puffy was able to see that the woman had red markings around her shoulders like tattoos, and her skin had some gel-like substance across her skin. She looked between Puffy and Foolish before settling her gaze on Foolish, her body relaxing under his wary gaze. "What is up, my aquatic friend? My name is Sally! I'm looking for a boy. He should be pretty tall, almost golden hair, the brightest blue eyes, a penchant for mischief, and he goes by Tommy!"

Foolish looked up at Puffy for guidance. The sheep hybrid lowered herself down, placing a reassuring hand on Foolish's shoulder. Sally didn't notice Foolish's hesitance to answer, or if she did, Sally didn't care. It was clear that she was mistrustful of Puffy. Unlike most humans who drifted towards Puffy because of her humanoid appearance, Sally was a hybrid who found kinship in another ocean based hybrid. Puffy would never judge someone for their wariness of the opposite species. Even Nether and End hybrids were usually caught infighting. Foolish pointed towards a nearby tower on the ocean shore, closer to Pandora's Vault than the dock was. "Tommy should be there. We gave him breakfast earlier."

Sally nodded. She turned away from them with a friendly wave goodbye. Puffy pulled on Foolish's hand. She left the fishing pole behind as she followed Sally with Foolish walking alongside her. Sally hummed a tune as she got closer to the tower. When they got pretty close, Puffy could make out Tommy's body approaching them. Puffy raised a hand to stop Foolish when she saw Tommy's face. Puffy had seen an angry Tommy before, but this one looked like he was bridled with vengeful rage that had been given years to simmer. He was exhaling sharply with prideful stomps with his gray eyes blazing with lightning during a hurricane. Sally remained calmly trotting towards him with a easy grin and pep in her step. Sally had finished humming by the time she met Tommy in the middle.

Tommy raised his fist. He slammed it against Sally's cheek with enough force to knock her to the ground. Foolish jumped back while Puffy's eyes widened. She had never seen Tommy's rage-filled violent actions, and she was almost terrified of the cold, clear bloodlust dripping into his eyes like blood sliding down a wall after a murder. Sally rose to her feet, hunched over with one hand on her bent knee, the other hand holding her bleeding nose that was probably broken. Sally looked up at Tommy with the same smile. "Alright, I deserved that. Nice punch, little bro!"

"You call me that one more time, and I will cook you over a fire like the fucking fish you are," Tommy growled his words out. Sally sighed with easy acceptance. She stood back up while rubbing away the last of her blood. She looked Tommy up and down with an appraising eye. Tommy scowled at her with his glare darkening. His vision slid over to Puffy and Foolish. His gaze lightened but it was still sharp enough to cut stone.

"Little bro? Are you two siblings?" Puffy asked with an eyebrow raised. Sally twisted to the side so she was side-by-side with Tommy. Despite the obvious differences in their physical appearances, Puffy could instantly see the similarities. They had the same facial structure down to the nose curve, eye shape, and chin pointedness. Sally had the same sparkling wildness that Tommy had before the wars and his death.

"How did you think he's Fundy's uncle?" Sally said with a hearty laugh. Tommy slammed his elbow into Sally's stomach. She folded over in pain, but a low chuckle managed to fall from her lips even as she sucked in gasping breaths. She quirked an eye at Tommy with her face tilting towards him. "I don't believe that one was called for."

"This is Sally. She's a salmon hybrid who figured out how to shape-shift. She fucked Wilbur to get Fundy. Swam off in the ocean after that, abandoning the family she made on the surface," Tommy looked down at Sally with the last words. He was implying that he was the family she left behind, not Wilbur and Fundy. That was fair since... she did. Sally left her child, her pseudo husband, and her brother without a goodbye or explanation.

"Aww, my brother was always more attached to people than I was! I'm curious why you stuck around. You could have joined me out at sea! We could have been mermaids or pirates sailing on the waves!" Sally explained with a clap of her hands as she thought about the what could have beens. Tommy slammed the palm of his hand against the back of Sally's head. She grimaced as the pain swelled in her body. She rubbed the area with a pout aimed at Tommy.

"I want you to shut the hell up. Quit acting like it was fucking easy to leave! At least lie to me and say it was the hardest thing you had to do. Pretend it was to save my life or some bullshit instead of your own selfishness," Tommy snapped at her with biting words and unforgiving eyes. Sally sighed onto her hand that propped her head up, elbow tucked onto her knee as she bended down to the ground. Tommy made a choking motion with his hands before walking away. Puffy tilted her head at Sally before chasing after Tommy. Foolish did what he was asked, staying with Sally.

Puffy found Tommy sitting at the bottom of the ladder that led up the tower. He was fighting back tears that he wouldn't let Puffy see. She didn't try to force it as she sat down beside him, facing the opposite way as to not make it seem like she wanted to watch him cry. Tommy let out a breath as he leaned his head against her shoulder. "Fuck it, I want to hate her. She brought me to the surface a long time ago, when I was young and stupid and the most human. She had fallen in love with some damn singer by the waterside. She seduced him while leaving me to my own devices. She left me with that singer while she went to shitty freshwater to give birth. Wilbur fucking took care of me. He treated me like an actual sibling. Sally came back to drop off a fox child. She left that night. Didn't tell me anything. She didn't even teach me how to shift that way I could go with her. I gave up hope on finding her. And now she shows up like..."

Tommy punched the cobblestone walls with his fist. He exhaled something that would have been a sob had it been any louder. Tommy rubbed his arm that he used to punch the wall and Sally. "It was easier to pretend Wilbur was my real brother. It was easier to pretend I wasn't related to Fundy. It was easier to pretend that I was made in a lab to be the perfect boy. Anything is easier than admitting that she exists and that I still love her..."

Puffy took Tommy's hand, squeezing it to reassure him that he was in the tower with her instead of wherever her brain was taking her. Puffy looked at him, knowing she wouldn't catch his eyes but hoping he'd see her sincerity. "It's okay, Tommy. It's okay to not hate her. It's okay to have some part of you hate her. You shouldn't push her away, though. You need closure. You need to confront Sally and what she did. When you're ready to talk to her, to ask why, it will make you feel better. You don't need to do it now. Do it when you feel better. When we confront our demons, we take away their power."

Tommy didn't reply. He squeezed Puffy's hand, leaning against her shoulder again. Puffy stayed there until she felt Tommy fall asleep against her. It wasn't much longer until Foolish came into the tower, admitting that Sally went back into the ocean. Puffy nodded while pulling Foolish into her other side. She played with his hair until both her boys had fallen asleep.
