"Shroud! I'm back home!" Tommy called out as he walked into his house. Tommy dropped some of his gear into one of his chests before walking over to Shroud's terrarium on the ceiling in the corner. Tommy frowned when he didn't see his beloved pet. Tommy tapped a pattern out on the glass that always got Shroud's attention. It was a way they could communicate since Shroud didn't speak any languages that Tommy recognized. Tommy was vaguely aware that he was tapping out something in morse code. He wondered if Shroud understood morse code. Maybe Tommy could teach it to Shroud that way they could talk to each other.

While Tommy was distracted, something came to the glass from inside the terrarium. Tommy called it out as a something because it wasn't the Shroud that Tommy knew. A toddler, probably two years old, was smiling brightly at Tommy as it crawled over. Tommy recognized the spider features of the child. For starters, it had two big red eyes with two smaller pair above and one smaller pair underneath. The child had dark gray skin with black spots around the hands and feet. Different to a spider, this child had two arms and two legs along with thick, curly black hair that Tommy could already tell was really soft. The child tapped against the glass in the pattern that Shroud would respond with. Tommy could have chalked it all up to circumstance but the child lifted their arms into the air while calling out, "Mimi!"

Tommy kept his gaze on the child as he wandered over to his chest. Tommy took out a wooden pickaxe. He lifted it up to the terrarium, breaking the glass open. The child giggled as Tommy lifted them into his arms to keep him away from the glass. Tommy carried the child to the other side of his house, setting him down on top of the anvil. Tommy took a deep breath before biting his sleeve to muffle his screaming. The child looked him over curiously. Tommy looked back at the child. "Are you... are you Shroud?"

The child nodded with a bright shine in their red eyes. Tommy nodded slowly. He should have suspected that Shroud was a shifter. He was too clever to completely be a Mob. Still, Tommy hadn't prepared himself or his house for a shifter. He had a terrarium with a food dispenser for a pet. He didn't have a room, clothes, or even safety protocols for this sort of situation. That was to say that Tommy would be dealing with this situation. Tommy could head to the nearest village with Shroud. Maybe someone there would take care of Shroud. Alternatively, Tommy could ask someone else to take in Shroud. Tubbo and Ranboo already had a kid, they could have two! Or maybe Puffy would take pity on Shroud. Whatever the case, Tommy wasn't going to take care of Shroud...

... that's what Tommy said but here he sat, a whole week later, sowing a new sweater for Shroud. He had sealed away his mineshaft until he could properly store everything. He had expanded the size of the dirt house to include a kitchen, living room, and two bedrooms. Tommy had moved his gear to the basement that way Shroud wouldn't accidentally get into it and hurt himself. He even cleaned away the terrarium because it seemed a little too patronizing.

Tommy had really meant to give Shroud away. The spiderling just stuck himself to Tommy's shirt until they both returned home. If Tommy really wanted to, he could have gotten Shroud to let go, but it was too adorable that Shroud wanted to stay that badly. Tommy felt his stubbornness crumble when Shroud happily called him 'Mimi'. Tommy was sure that he would have a heart attack at how bright Shroud could shine when he was smiling.

Shroud sat in his play pen in the living room with his stuffed animals. Tommy was listening enough that he would know if Shroud got hurt, but not enough that he knew what Shroud was having them act like. Tommy was stitching together Shroud's autumn wardrobe that night. It wouldn't be too long until the cooler weather descended upon the Overworld. Tommy wanted to be prepared. He had made a few shirts and light pants that wouldn't make Shroud too hot.

"Mimi!" Shroud called out. Tommy looked over at the boy. Shroud raised his hands above the walls of the play pen. Tommy set what he had of the sweater aside to pick Shroud up. The boy giggled as he wrapped his arms around Tommy's neck. "I 'ove you!"
