Tommy
Tommy laid on his cot, an arm thrown over his face to keep the firelight from reaching his eyes. He tried to sleep, he really did, but whatever forces that forced the mind to rest had not taken him yet. After minutes of pretending to be asleep for the sake of his ward mates, Tommy practically rolled off his cot onto the ground. Before he could hit the ground, his hand closed into a fist. An inch from the ground, Tommy began floating into a standing position with a strong wind pushing him up. Tommy opened his fist once he was on his feet. Even the simple use of magic didn't tire him out. The other wards would have been knocked unconscious by such a spell. No one knew it yet, except for Tommy, but he was something of a prodigy when it came to magic.
Tommy grabbed the heels of his shoes as he tip toed around the cots that made up the barracks for wards. Once Tommy had reached the door, he was already preparing the right spell. It was easy for him to rotate the metal locks on the door using earth magic. Once the door swung open, Tommy darted into the hallway. He closed the door behind him as quickly as he could as to not let the lights of the hallway wake his ward mates up. Tommy didn't want to be caught before he even did anything.
Tommy walked along the hallway. He hopped on one foot as he pulled his shoe on the other foot. He should have fallen several times, but he caught himself with wind magic before he could crash. It would be a shame if he woke someone from one of the other rooms up. While Tommy was pretty good at basic elemental magic, he didn't know a thing about mental manipulation. Tommy would have a hard time convincing whichever kid found him to go back to sleep. It would be even worse if Tommy encountered one of the guards. There was no way that one of those guys would let Tommy continue wandering. The best case scenario is that the told his councilor what he had been up to when he should have been sleeping. Worse case scenario was that Tommy was sent to the head Watchers. Somewhere between best and worse was being executed on the spot.
Tommy thanked his luck that he didn't encounter anyone as he disappeared into the training room. If Tommy wanted to tire himself out, magic practice would be the most fun way to do it. Tommy's fascination with magic knew no bounds. Tommy would even read actual books about the study and theories of magic. Tommy couldn't do math that well, but he knew the complete history of the use of magic. His captivation even turned into raw power. Tommy could complete any test that his teachers gave if it involved solving with magic. He knew his spells, limits, and capabilities better than anyone else in his class. What kept him from being a model student was his foul mouth and disrespect for authority figures.
Tommy snapped his fingers. He felt a thrum of energy leave his body as the candles along the walls of the training room were set on fire. Magic was all about forcing a person's will over chaos. With the four core elements, it was about letting the elements do what they wanted. Fire wants to burn. Tommy simply reconstructed the mana within his body to form fire and gave it a place to burn with the candles. Tommy was one of the few people in his class that could control the element of fire considering it was the closest element, other than Void, to pure chaos.
Tommy formed a fireball in his hand. He launched it into the air. Tommy followed the fireball as it approached the dummies on the other side of the room. Tommy separated the fireball into two smaller ball with a slice of air. The balls curved into two different directions. The dummies were set to fire. Since they were made for magical purposes, the dummies couldn't be burnt. Tommy reached a hand towards the troughs underneath the candles. Some water floated into the air following Tommy's direction. Instead of letting the water hang around the dummies like novice mages would do, Tommy creating a winding river in the air out of the water that the dummies went through. The element water wants to flow meaning that a magic user shouldn't stop it. Tommy let the river end at the trough, dumping the water back where it needed to go.
