Crumbling

Hi everyone. What a hell of a few months it's been since I last posted. I didn't exactly see 2021 off with fond memories and nor did I bring in 2022 with happiness either. Family illness, my own health issues and then my dog passing have pushed writing to the furthest part of my brain. BUT! As you can see, I've had a little flurry of creativity and I'm back with a little update for you. Thank you so so much for sticking with me. Shits about to get real...

Chris' POV

My rental car was sitting outside of the airport in Scottsdale when I had arrived. It was 11.30 at night and right now I was sitting outside of Lucy's house, staring up at her bedroom window. I was trying my hardest to resist going out there right now and knocking on her door. Any person would have gone to their hotel room and got some sleep and come back later- at a more sensible hour. But I wasn't just any person. So I got myself comfy in my seat, draped my jacket over myself and prepared for a long chilly night in the car...

............

*Bang *

"Ugh!" I woke with a start, my eyes shooting wide open at the sudden noise that woke me from my nightmare filled sleep. "Fuck..." I groaned, rubbing my face- momentarily forgetting where in the hell I was.

*Bang*

I jumped out of my skin again and looked out of the window at the source of the noise. The biggest garbage truck chugged by my car window. That's when I realised it was broad daylight. My eyes shot to the clock on the dash, then to the house. "Lucy" I breathed out. Her car was gone. I frowned and rubbed my face hard with my palms, blinking back at the house. But it was Thursday. She didn't go into work until 12, and it was only 10.

"Fuck" I cried in dispair, looking around at my surroundings, not knowing what the hell to do now. Where do I go? Do I call Seb? My stomach gurgled in hunger. And I needed a piss so bad. This couldn't get any worse.

........

Lucy's POV

I sat in the doctors office with the most nervous feeling in my stomach that I had ever felt. My hands were shaking, my knees felt like they were knocking together and if I hadn't have had my niece Stacey there I would have been even worse.

"It's okay Aunt Luce, I'm here" her young voice whispered from beside me. Her hand reaching out to take mine. "Thank you sweetie. I'm so glad you are" I smiled at her. She was only 18 but mentally much older than her years. Her nose crinkled up as she gave me a smile and my heart swelled. "I'm sorry your mom made you come with me though" I confessed to her, "it's not exactly a fun place for you to come with me" it's not a fun place for me to come either I thought as I looked around the room. There were two couples sat at one end of the waiting area, one lady heavily pregnant and looking like she was going to pop; the other looked about half way cooked. Then there was me in the middle, looking like a nervous wreck, gripping onto the hands of a young girl beside me. And at the other end of the room was a teenaged girl and her mom, both of them sat crying. I felt a thick lump rise up in my throat and I tried my best to swallow it down and I looked away. Guilt wracked my body and I just wanted this over with.

"Lucy Armstrong?" A nurse appeared from somewhere, a thin white plastic disposable apron covered her torso and light blue gloves adorned her hands as she stood waiting by the open door, looking over us all to see who reacted.

I took a deep breath and stood up, freeing Stacey's hand. "I can come in with you Lucy" her gentle voice offered to me. But I took another shaky breath and shook my head. "It's okay sugar lump, you don't wanna see what happens in there" I said quietly, giving her a slight smile before gripping onto my bag and moving over to the nurse waiting to take me through.

Chris' POV

I knocked on the red door, bouncing on my heels as I waited impatiently. Seconds later I knocked again, even louder. "Alright Alright! Jeez..." I heard her voice through the door. The key turned and then the sound of the dead bolt shifting had my heart rate rising, and then the door opened.

"What the fuck?!" She blurted out. "Hey Charlie..." I smiled sheepishly. "What are you doing here?" She asked, almost spat out at me. I flinched at the glare she was sending me right now. "ah, yeah, I um..." I rubbed the back of my neck as my eyes never left the wooden floor of her porch. "She's not here" she snapped at me. I sighed and nodded. Not that she would tell me if she was. "Does Seb know you're here?!" she demanded. God the girl wouldn't let me get a word in, even if I could get them out my mouth damn mouth. I took a breath and raised my gaze to her. Shit she was intimidating. "he does now...I called when I landed. But he doesn't know I've come here" I answered her. "I just-" I sighed and tensed my jaw. I promised myself I wouldn't cry. It was all my fault anyway. "I glanced back at Charlie and quickly looked away, she looked like she was about to punch me any second. "I just want to see her. I need to see her. Apologise." I swallowed. "I stayed outside her place last night- but I fell asleep, and this morning when I woke up she was gone." I explained. "She isn't usually at work until 12, I thought I'd see her before she left" I added.

"No, she was um...she was busy this morning." Charlie replied, making my eyes shoot back up to her. "she- she won't be at work either, so don't be turning up there either. Chris, you better just stay away from her"

"I need to see her. To explain. Wait- why wouldn't she be back at work? Has something happened? Is she okay? Is the baby okay?" I asked, panic starting to bubble up in my gut. The look in Charlie's eyes was one I couldn't quite figure. "Charlie please! You gotta tell me what's happening!" I begged her. Her green eyes rose to the sky and she shook her head as she muttered something about the Lord forgiving her, and then she looked back at me. "Lucy- she's okay..."
"A-and the baby?!" I panicked. I searched her eyes and it's like it all made sense. "Please tell me she isn't aborting my child?!" The sobs wracked my body as I felt the blood drain from my face. I stumbled and collapsed to the floor, hearing the sound of Charlie vaguely shouting my name...
