Lucy's POV
I walked into the hospital with Chris hot on my heels. I headed on over to the counter to check in whilst he snuck off to grab a seat in the back of the waiting area. Of course I had no idea that he would be here to come along with me, so picking 10.30 in the morning on a Wednesday didn't seem like a bad idea. "Please take a seat, your wait won't be too long" the girl behind the computer told me, still trying to take a glance at the person I'd come in with. "yeah thanks" I kind of muttered before turning away. I guess I had to get used to this. No matter where we were, he'd be gawped at. And that was just because he was hot, never mind being famous.
"Everything alright?" he asked in a hushed tone. Glancing at me from under his hat, trying to not make eye contact with anyone else. "yeah. There's not much of a wait time" I answered, looking back at him. "ok" he nodded back before looking at the floor. "Y'know, it kinda totally sucks we can't just sit here like a regular coup- ugh, I mean-"
"Yeah I know what you mean." I sighed, seeing about 4 other couples giving us the side eye. With the dude to our left wearing a S.H.E.I.L.D shirt. Chris sunk back into his seat. It was bad enough that they were all watching him, star struck I guess, but it only took one of them to call the media and the whole world would know that Chris was gonna be a daddy. And right now it would be the very last thing that we wanted.
"Once we see her or him and we see they're ok, you can tell whoever you want, control how it comes out I guess" I said, looking back to him, but the look on his face had me snorting. "How the news comes out" I sassed him, knowing exactly what he was thinking. Which had him smirking back at me. He raised his head a little to look at the walls that surrounded us, "ya know, some of these images..." he swallowed, "they're gonna give me nightmares" he said, staring at one in particular. I glanced across and it was a poster of a rather unexpectedly graphic drawing of a woman giving birth. "Jesus, its labelled and everything" I gasped in surprised. Chris giggled a little as I'd grabbed his hand at the shock of seeing it. "oh shut up" I swatted him when I realised what I'd done. Pulling my hand from his and crossing my arms over my chest, "at least you're not the one having to go through with it" I added with a playful scowl. "yeah but seeing you go through that" he nodded to the poster hanging on the wall, "that would be a thing of beauty" he smiled at me, and I couldn't figure out if he was bullshitting or being honest. So I narrowed my eyes at him, "1, shut up." - He laughed, "and 2, you are not going anywhere near there when I give birth" I warned him. His laughter died down rather sharply and his eyes looked sad, "oh, ugh, sorry, I'm getting way ahead of myself...Sorry, I just-"
"Chris, you're gonna be in the room." I corrected him, rolling my eyes. "you're just not going down there" I added, nodding towards my lap. "oh" his cheeks blushed. "um, sorry" he huffed awkwardly. "I mean, thank you. So much, you don't realise how much being here, and there, it just...I'm so lucky-"
"Miss Armstrong?" A voice called out, distracting me from Chris' words. I glanced over to the lady that owned said voice before looking back to Chris. "come on" I said, grabbing my bag, "it's us" and I stood up and started through the seats of people towards the nurse that stood waiting for me. I was about to turn to check Chris was still with me, but I felt a gentle hand on the small of my back and then the warm presence of him just to my side and I smiled to myself. He was there, just like I'd wished he would be.
...........
"Okay, Lucy, the gel is going to be a little cold..." the nurse warned me right as she squirted a tube of the gel thingy across my bare belly. "Jesus!" I hissed, grabbing the paper towel that was set out underneath me on the bed. I heard Chris snigger beside me so I shot him a look, but the nurse than interrupted us. "So, now that's ready, lets see if we can get a good look at the little one in there...." she said, shuffling on her stool as she wheeled the little machine closer to the bed I was on.
My heart rate was pumping up and up in anticipation. I watched as she typed a few things down on the machine keyboard and then picked up some joy stick looking thing and pressed it down onto my belly.
The moments that I lay there staring at the screen felt like minutes. Staring at the weird grainy black and white picture of my uterus. All the while the nurse roamed the joy stick over my skin. "where are you little one?" the nurse pondered as she frowned at the screen. My eyes darted between that and the nurse. Why the hell couldn't she find my baby?
I turned my head round to look at Chris. He was sitting on the chair beside the bed, his elbows resting on his knees, leaning forward watching what was happening. His blue eyes looked immediately to me and he reached out and took my hand in his. Just the touch of his hand on mine comforted me. "It's Ok Darlin'-"
"Here we go!" the nurse interrupted him, causing us both to shoot our attention back to the screen where I saw a tiny little blob floating there. "the little cutie was hiding from us!" the nurse giggled lightly. "camera shy like his mamma" a whisper came from beside me and I tore my eyes from the screen back to Chris. His face was lit up with the biggest smile and tears brimmed is eyes. I let out a slight breathy laugh as tears began to sting my eyes too. But then I froze as a strange thumping sound echoed around us. Chris gripped my hand tighter and his eyes locked onto mine as we grinned widely at each other.
"and that is your baby's heart beat"
