chapter thirty one

Benny fumbles with his house keys, while trying not to drop the drink in his hand and the to go bag. "You want me to help you, man?" Ethan chuckles as he watches his friend struggle.

"Nah, I got this. I'm super boyfriend, I'm gonna get this to Mary without dropping it and without losing my keys." Benny replies with a smirk. Ethan shakes his head, "Super boyfriend? More like dumbass."

"Oh shut up, at least I have a girlfriend." Benny shoots back. Ethan fake scoffs, knowing Benny was just joking and not actually making fun of him, "Well!"

The two laugh at each other as they continue down the hall. "So, you have any ideas for Mary's birthday on Saturday?" Ethan asks.

"Oh yeah, I've got a whole plan ready. I'm thinking a small party with just us, Rory, and the girls, but, I need Rory to distract her all day so we can set up. It also makes the surprise more special since she'll think I forgot to plan something, but I didn't." He grins, "It's full proof!"

Ethan scrunches his face at him, "You sure about that? What if she actually thinks you forgot? Then we'll both be single."

Benny shakes his head, "I don't think so, I think it'll work-oh, there she is." He says once he spots the brunette across the hall. "See ya in Geography."

He displays a goofy grin on his face while he goes up behind her, putting the coffee and bag in her face and kissing her cheek, "Morning."

Mary blushes at his actions, "Awe, Benny. Thank you, I really needed this today." She takes the warm drink and bag from his hands, he grins at her. "I had a feeling. Did you sleep ok last night?"

She shrugs, "Kinda, better than the past few nights at least. I think the worst of them is over now."

He nods, "Lets hope so. Hey, what're you doing Saturday night?"

Mary nearly chokes on her coffee, she knew why he was asking about that day in particular, it was the one day of the year she dreaded. "Uh, I-I don't know yet, so far nothing."

He smiles, "Cool, well, Ethan was planning a movie night for that night, you wanna come?"

She shrugs, "Sure."

"Good, I'm probably gonna be busy most of the day so, come for like 6:00?" He asks.

Mary internally breathes a sigh of relief, it sounded bad, but she was glad Benny forgot her birthday. She didn't want to celebrate it in the slightest, for many reasons. "Yeah, that sounds good."

He grins at her, "Sweet." 'She has no idea, this is working out perfectly.'

Benny walks up to Rory's locker later that day, patting him on the shoulder. "Hey, so, can you spend the day with Mary on Saturday to distract her?"

Rory nods, "Yeah, sure. My dad doesn't like me in the house all day anyway, so. Count me in."

Benny grins, "Perfect. This is gonna be the best birthday a boyfriend can give his girlfriend in all of history. But I'm counting on you, man, do not spoil the surprise."

"I know, I know. I'm not that dumb." Rory rolls his eyes. "Trust me, she won't suspect a thing."
