Prompt: Frozen river

--------------------

"Peter can we please stop."

Peter swallowed hard, his grip tightening around his brother's waist as the two made their way through the snowy wood.

He brought them to a stop, gripping his brother to keep him standing. "Does it hurt?" He mumbled.

Edmund rolled his eyes. "No it feels fine." He grumbled sarcastically.

Peter bit his lip, sitting Edmund gently underneath a tree, unable to ignore the way he flinched when he sat in the snow. "Sorry." He sighed.

Edmund stared at him for a moment before relaxing and shaking his head. "No I'm sorry." He breathed. "I didn't mean to snap like that."

Peter gave him a weak smile, sighing sadly before looking down to check out Edmund's leg. "That wolf really got you good didn't he?" He choked, staring at the ripped, blood stained trousers, just about hiding a deep wolf bite.

"It sure did." Edmund said through gritted teeth as Peter checked the wound.

Peter was extremely worried by the amount of blood, and slipped off his cloak to wrap around the leg.

"Peter what are you doing?" Edmund murmered.

"Trying to stop the bleeding." Peter told him, tying the cloak and apologising when Edmund winced.

"Peter you'll freeze!" Edmund exclaimed, sounding worried, but his voice was full of pain.

"I'm fine." Peter reassured him, giving him a weak smile. "You reckon you can stand?"

Edmund sighed. "I can try." He breathed, nodding.

Peter helped him to his feet, wrapping his brother's arm around his shoulders and his arm around Edmund's waist, helping him to stay standing as best he could.

"How long until home." Edmund whispered, sounding utterly exhausted.

"At least a day or two." Peter whispered, knowing exactly what Edmund was gonna say.

"I can't make it that long." Edmund whispered. "I'll lose way too much blood."

Peter swallowed hard. "You - You'll be fine." He choked, voice cracking as the two began to walk.

"No I won't be." Edmund said, swallowing hard and limping along beside Peter. "You and I both know that."

Peter took a deep breath, closing his eyes for a moment before sighing. "I will get you home alive if its the last thing I ever do." He said firmly.

Edmund stared at him. "Please don't say that." He whispered, able to feel the blood rolling down his leg and panicking slightly at the determination in his brother's voice.

"No, I mean it Ed." Peter snapped. "I'll carry you home if I have to, I will not let you bleed out."

"Two days Peter." Edmund choked. "There's no way."

"This is a problem." Peter whispered.

"And it just got worse."

Peter stopped walking, glancing ahead and his heart stopping when he spotted the frozen river ahead. "Crap." He whispered.

"Okay, you know what happened last time we tried to cross a frozen river." Edmund grumbled. "I ended up in the water, and if that happens this time then I'm done for."

Peter turned to look at him. "We - We have to try." He whispered. "We can't just stay here, you definitely won't make it then."

Edmund sighed, resting his head against Peter's shoulder, exhausted. "I guess." He whispered, voice choked.
