"Kaylee" Hill says knocking on the door of my office
"What can I do for you Mariah?" I say not turning around from my position standing looking at my wall covered in final designs, of our new larger base
"Coulson has some news, I figured you would want to hear it too" She says holding up her phone
"Yeah patch it through" I say pointing to my computer, the screen projecting the video call now.
"Hello ladies" Coulson smiles on the other line
"Good to see you again, I trust that you're back in charge of things again? I'll have no more surprise visits from other members of new SHIELD questioning me about you?" I say with a half smile
"I'm sorry about that, I hear they came on date night too, I missed seeing you dressed up again didn't I? Darn, how's Rogers?" He teases lightly
"Yep, missed it again, sorry but have someone stop and get you a tabloid magazine we have been first page news. Steve is doing well, as well as we can expect I guess, learning his best friends still alive is kinda messing with him a little but he's a fighter" I say with a small smile
"Ah well my Fireball, I have some good news, we found it" He says with a smile on his face
"You found the sceptre's location?" I say maybe too eager, pushing my chair back as i stand up
"I'll send over all of the information I have, be safe, it's not going to be an easy one" He says as my computer beeps reserving the info
"Want to present it to the group?" I ask looking over at Hill
"Sure thing, I'll figure out a way to keep all this a secret" She says after I print the file for her, she quickly makes her way out of my office.
"I miss you Fireball, I'm glad your doing well" Coulson says with a small smile
"I miss you too Phil, I hope things finally settle with us taking down this base" I say with a sigh "I know I'll never have a normal life but, maybe just maybe this will be a step in the right direction"
"Are you thinking of getting out?" He asks surprised, talking about it even a little made it too real, feeling myself becoming slightly dizzy at the thought I take a seat again.
"Taking a step back maybe, maybe focusing on team care, not fighting, I'm tired of fighting. Dads thinking of retiring for good after this though" I say leaning back in my chair "I just don't know if I could even convince Steve to step back, he's a born fighter, I don't think he will ever want to stop fighting"
"I just want you happy, it's what you deserve, I'm always a call away, sorry I've been unreachable for a little while though" He says with a comforting smile
"No worries" I reply, hearing a chime overhead signaling a meeting "Gotta go, they already are summoning us, I'll talk later"
"Bye Kaylee" He says as I hang up
I get up and walk down the hall to the meeting room, watching as everyone slowly arrives. I couldn't help but think about how silly it is for me to even consider taking a step back at this point in my life, let alone even considering asking Steve to consider taking a step back.
No. Stepping back now would be the most selfish thing I could do.
