A Threat To Safety

The sun had just finished setting as I walked into the apartment building. I bought a few things to make an extravagant dinner with. I want things to be special tonight. While climbing the stairs to the apartment I hear Steve talking to someone in the hall.

"Ah, Well, I'll keep my distance" I hear Steve's voice float down the stairs

Why would he say that, that's a completely unusual thing to say to someone I think to myself as i continue to climb the stairs.

"Hopefully not too far" A female voice says, now hearing the conversation clearly as I approach our floor "By the way I think you left the stereo on"

"Oh" I hear him say slightly confused tone, I'm close enough that I can hear loud music coming from the apartment

"Oh sorry sweetie I guess I forgot to turn it off before I left" I say finishing the last stair smiling at Steve

"Oh you must be the best friend, I'm Kate I moved in recently" She says smiling at me holding her laundry under her arm

"Girlfriend" I say venomously, correcting her "Have a great night"

I turn my back to her and move to kiss Steve. He kisses me back but looks confused. Kate finally descends the stairs

"I didn't turn music on, somethings up" I whisper to him quietly he nods in understanding

"We will talk about your jealousy later my little witch" He says motioning me to leave my grocery bags at the door and follow him. We climb up the fire escape up to the window in the kitchen. Steve pulls the window open only making a small creaking noise. We both slowly making our way through the window and find Fury sitting in the living room slumped in a side chair

"I don't remember giving you a key" Steve says to him, obviously very upset, Fury moves and grunts as he does, he's injured.

"You really think I'd need one?" He says back sarcastically "My wife kicked me out"

Immediately I knew something was very wrong, Nick isn't married, that I know to be a fact, wife, it's a metaphor, for SHIELD maybe?

"I didn't know you were married." Steve says completely distrusting of the situation

"A lot of things you don't know about me." Fury says leaning forward, I fight every urge in my body to move to help him, Fury and Steve had a tiff not 24 hours ago, and now he's here in our apartment.

"I know Nick, that's the problem" Steve moves to turn on the light, I see the extent of some of the damages, Fury's badly injured. He reaches up and clicks off the light, then reaches for his phone, on it is a message The Apartment Is Bugged

"I'm sorry to had to do this, but I had no place else to crash, and you had a guest room open up" Fury says holding up another message, SHIELDS Compromised. So I was right, the wife is SHIELD, they did this to him. Also he knows about Steve and I.

"Who else knows about your wife" Steve asks stepping closer to me, making me stand behind him protectively

"Just my friends," Fury says standing up and walking over to us, his phone shows a message, Just Us, great.

"Is that what we are?" Steve says backing me around the corner protectively again

"That's up to you, if you trust one thing, know I would never hurt Kaylee" He says, noticing just how protective Steve is of me. Just then, shots burst through the walls of the apartment, I dive behind the wall as Steve drags Fury into the hall, as he looks through the window, he sees the person responsible for the attack

"Don't trust anyone" Fury chokes out after handing Steve a flash drive, suddenly the door burst open, it's the girl from across the hall

"Captain, I'm agent 13 of SHIELD Special Service. I'm assigned to protect you" She says coming around the corner and kneeling next to Fury the same way I am now, I have pressure on one of the wounds that's bleeding the most, and I've frozen the others trying to restrict blood flow to the areas.

"On whose orders" Steve almost shouts at her

"His" She says reaching into her pocket and pulling out a radio "Foxtrot is down, he's unresponsive, I need EMTs"

"Do we have a 20 on the shooter?" The man over the radio responds, how did he know there was a shooting, trust no one, Fury's voice rings in my head again.

"Tell him I'm in pursuit" Steve says before looking at me quickly "Be safe."

"You too." I yell after him. With every ounce of my being I want to go with him, to make sure he's safe, but I don't, I can't leave Fury this way, I'm the only person I trust with him right now.

Steve leaps out of the window, and I focus myself back in Fury, the bloods not stopping, he's completely unresponsive. EMTs come through the doors moments later

"Miss we have to take him" One of the EMTs says as another moves me out of the way.

"I'm coming with him" I say in a commanding tone, standing my ground

"Sure fine, we need to go now" Another EMT says as they get Fury onto a stretcher

"Kaylee" I hear Fury choke out, he had briefly regained consciousness

"I'm here Nick, im here" I say taking his hand in mine as he is wheeled to the ambulance.

"Protect Rogers" Fury speaks again as we are in the ambulance as his grip loosens on my hand. His heart rate monitor spikes and then shows no activity. The EMTs jump in and start to administer life saving efforts. I watch in horror as they try to save not only my boss's life, but my friend's life.
