Ian and Brady stood pacing outside of the Third Division’s broken down building as the bomb squads went in to deactivate all of the dynamite that Lucy had set up. Their muscles tensed up when they saw how much dynamite they were unloading from the building. Ian didn’t even want to question where she had gotten all of that. The mere thought made him shiver. Ian watched as the last of the bomb squad started to come out of the building and he felt his heart throb when he saw his little sister and Brady’s little brother come out with them. They looked very unhealthy, and Ian silently cursed Lucy. Ian ran over and pulled his sister into a hug and it broke his heart to hear her whimpering from fear. Their reunion was short lived though. They had to get them to the hospital to get them back to their healthy state. Ian watched as the ambulance hauled them away and Brady walked up behind him.
“At least they’re safe,” he whispered. Ian nodded.
“I plan to keep it that way.” Ian turned to head back to his car. Dr. Vaun’s sacrifice was weighing heavily on Ian and he blamed himself for not catching on sooner that Dr. Vaun was actually made into a bomb. The way he described how Lucy linked the bomb to the person made Ian want to vomit. Lucy’s too damn smart for her own good. Ian recalled that one time he had said that Lucy had joined their mission for her skills, not her brains. Ian shook his head at the irony of that as he got behind the wheel. How things have changed, Ian thought as they headed back to the First Division’s headquarters.
They walked through the doors to see people running around, making calls and acting in a state of panic. Ian and Brady made their way to Lucy’s room at a dead sprint, thinking she may have escaped again. Lucas spotted them as they turned the corner and he held up his hand.
“She’s not gone,” he said quickly. “We just have a lot of work to do.”
“Did you figure out how Dr. Vaun triggered his own bomb?” Brady asked and Lucas held open his other hand. Resting in his palm were two small devices and Brady raised an eyebrow.
“Lucy had these on her…in her mouth,” Lucas said. “When security did a sweep of her, they didn’t check her mouth. They were lodged out of sight in the back. She listened to everything Dr. Vaun had said, and she timed it to where he didn’t say anything she didn’t want us to know.”
“She was toying with him,” Brady said coldly and Lucas nodded.
“She wanted us to hear what he had to say before she blew him up,” Lucas said and Ian hung his head. “Crane finished trying to get her to talk about ten minutes ago. She still hasn’t spilled anything.”
“I didn’t really expect her too,” Ian grumbled.
“If she doesn’t talk then we are in trouble though,” Lucas said. He crossed his arms. “I can’t send her to a prison because I’m afraid she’ll escape. We have a lot of people to find and we don’t know how much time we have.”
“Did someone go pick up the VP?” Brady asked.
Lucas nodded. “He’ll be transferred to a security base and we’ll see about removing his bomb.”
“Dr. Vaun said you wouldn’t be able too,” Ian said cautiously. Lucas gave him a sad glance.
“It’s the only lead we’ll have though,” Lucas said quietly. “Unless Lucy gives us something else.” Brady and Ian were silent as all three stood there.
“Let me try to talk to her,” Brady asked and Lucas looked at him.
“Brady, I don’t think it’ll be wise to have you or Ian talk to her right now. She made your mothers into…” Lucas trailed off, unable to finish the sentence.
