The room was completely silent after what Ian said. Even Crane and Demetri were stunned into silence.
“There’s…no way,” Lucas said with wide-eyes.
“The bombs are untraceable,” Ian said. “We are looking for places in the city Lucy could potentially hide them when they are in fact right under our noses!”
“So why haven’t any of the bombs gone off yet?” Cody asked. Ian looked at Dr. Vaun.
“Because they haven’t been triggered yet.”
“I think you need to take this to Lucy, now,” Dr. Vaun said with a sad smile. Ian and Brady wasted no time. While Lucas and Cody were still trying to wrap their heads around the impossible, they made their way back to Lucy’s room. Ian barged into the room and Brady locked the door behind him. If anyone else wanted to listen in, they would do so in the other room. Ian pulled up a chair and sat in front of Lucy, Brady following in suit. Lucy opened her eyes sleepily. When she saw them, a smile crept across her face.
“I’m too tired for more questions you know,” she said and Ian narrowed his eyes. He sat with his arms crossed and his eyes blazing with anger. Lucy studied him and then flickered her eyes over to Brady to see the same thing. She leaned back in her chair and chuckled. “It seems you may have come to a conclusion?”
“I know where the bombs are,” Ian said coldly and Lucy looked surprised.
“That was blunt,” she said sarcastically. She lifted her hands and set them on the table, her cuffs clanking on the table. “What about the bombs then?”
“They’re untraceable,” Brady said angrily. Lucy blinked at him.
“Is that it? I heard that last time outside my door. If that’s all you have then I’m afraid—“
“YOU USED THE CITIZENS AS BOMBS!” Ian yelled, cutting Lucy off. His sudden outburst caused Lucy to flinch back from surprise, but her smile returned even more violently. Lucy’s exhaustion seemed to fade as she started to chuckle darkly.
“I must say I’m impressed,” she whispered, her voice like venom. “It only took you a few weeks to actually figure that part out.”
“We know of the three hundred and fifty people you kidnapped,” Brady said as he slammed the file on the table. “You have three hundred and fifty bombs out there,” Brady said as he leaned on the table, hovering over Lucy’s left shoulder. Lucy shook her head slowly.
“Three hundred and fifty that have been reported, you are absolutely right,” Lucy said and Ian’s expression faltered.
“There’s more?” he asked quietly.
“Of course there are. I told you this; I’m taking down this country. I’ll need more than just a few bombs.”
“How many more walking bombs do you have out there?” Brady pressed. Lucy looked up at him.
“It actually depends,” Lucy whispered. “Which state are we talking about?” Brady took a few steps back and Ian’s face paled. Lucy turned her eyes back to Ian. “Do you see now? My work started long ago. I had someone under my control, a man called Commander Henry. He had connections and I used them. When I was done with him, he died. Dr. Vaun was there when he died. Tell me, Ian. What can you do against thousands of nuclear bombs scattered around the country, when you can’t even find them?”
“You used whole families so no one would report them missing,” Ian breathed and Lucy smiled psychotically at him.
“Now you are using your head,” she whispered. “However, there is still a lot that you don’t know.” Lucy laid her head down on the table and closed her eyes, signaling the conversation was over. Ian and Brady got up to leave when Lucy called out again. “I’d be careful where you set your feet though. Some of the bombs may be closer than you think.” The boys left the room to see Lucas, Cody, Crane and Demetri walking out of the room that allowed them to listen in, their faces pale.
