Stories had always been so important to Remus, they were an escape for him, a way to place himself in the shoes of a hero whose life was stress-free and who got their happy ending. He loved the idea of that, no haunting full moons that loomed just weeks away, no scars which plagued him, just a fight with a villain and then getting to marry a princess, not that princesses were really his type.
Sirius knew how much Remus' stories meant to him, for years he had watched Remus absorbed in these worlds and the characters they held, he loved seeing the slight reactions, a small smile or laugh, the tears which often clogged his eyes when he reached the ending of a particularly heart-wrenching book.
It was one of these days, Remus was sat by the fire reading a new book and Sirius walked over, sitting down next to him and laying his head in Remus' lap. This wasn't particularly unusual for either of them since they were incredibly close and Sirius would often come and lay with Remus when he was reading.
"whatcha reading?" Sirius asked, Remus moved his book slightly so he could look down to Sirius' face.
"The book you got me for my birthday, it's good. how'd you know I'd like it?" Remus asked, smiling slightly and moving a strand of Sirius' hair out of his face.
"You like every book, Rem." Sirius said, his eyes full of admiration for the werewolf.
"I suppose you're right, still, thank you pads." Remus said, closing his book for a moment to lean down and hug his friend, who happily wrapped his arms back around the taller boy.
Sirius enjoyed this time they spent together, even when he was simply laying while Remus read, sometimes Remus would idly reach his hand down to play with Sirius' hair which always made his heart melt a little. James couldn't count the times he had found them like this, Sirius either asleep or simply laying idly whilst Remus was immersed in a novel, idly tangling his hands in the long hair of the boy beneath him.
The Gryffindors weren't ever surprised when they saw them like this, or curled up together chatting quietly. Remus never thought much of it, he knew Sirius struggled with his own mental health and that he liked physical affection so he was more than happy to give it to him. To Sirius, however, it was an escape for him too, Remus had his stories and Sirius had him. When he was so close to the werewolf he finally felt loved, appreciated, safe. To him, Remus was a home, a place he went when he felt anxious or depressed just to escape for a while, to focus on the warmth of the other boy or the feeling of his hands in his hair.
After about two hours in that position Remus finally finished the last page, closing the book and leaning his head back and sighing.
"You okay?" Sirius asked, opening his eyes when he felt Remus move, Remus looked back down at him and couldn't help but smile when he met Sirius' eyes.
"Mhmm, just stretching my neck. I finished the book, it was actually really good, thanks again." Remus said.
"Mm course, 'm glad you liked it" Sirius said, sounding as though he had been drifting off to sleep. Remus couldn't help but gaze down at him as his eyes slowly began to flutter closed again and admire him, he did look incredibly handsome there, his hair was messy from Remus' fidgeting with it and his legs were angled upwards with his feet flat on the sofa. After a few minutes Remus notes that Sirius looked firmly asleep and this was confirmed when he then turned over, his head still on Remus' lap but now facing inward towards his stomach and his knees touching the back of the sofa.
"Hey, is he asleep?" Lily said, speaking quietly so she didn't wake him.
"Yeah, he was laying with me while I was reading and he just fell asleep I guess." Remus said, still looking down at the sleeping boy and stroking his hair gently.
"Aww, that's so cute. You guys are challenging me and James for cutest couple and you're not even a couple." Lily said, giggling and rolling her eyes.
"Shut up," Remus blushed but his demeanour changed quickly to an anxious one "do you think we act too close for friends?"
Lily thought for a moment "honestly? A little, but if it feels right for you guys then who cares" she shrugged.
"I know I just... I just sort of," he sighed "sometimes I feel like maybe we aren't friends, like maybe we're... more? y'know?"
Lily nodded, a small smile on her lips "I know, and I think he knows too. I mean dude his face has been three inches away from your dick for the last like three hours."
"Lily!" Remus half-shouted, before glancing back down at Sirius and going back to his quiet voice "I'm just scared if I try to talk to him about it that it'll stop y'know?"
"I know, Moony, but if you feel more towards him you have to talk to him." Lily said and Remus sighed, knowing she was right.
Sirius didn't sleep for long, about half an hour after that conversation he began to stir and he was awoken to the feeling of Remus' hand stroking his hair gently, and the other one placed on his torso.
"Mm, hi Rem" Sirius spoke quietly, his voice low after sleeping and Remus felt his spine tingle at the sound.
"Hey sleeping beauty" Remus mocked and Sirius laughed slightly, sitting up a bit.
"Were you talking to someone? I thought I heard you." Sirius said, rubbing his eyes sleepily, and Remus panicked for a moment.
"Uh yeah, Lily and me were talking, how come?" Remus asked, scared that Sirius heard everything he said.
"Oh no reason, I just thought I heard your voice while I was sleeping." Sirius shrugged, sitting up properly.
"I see, hey um actually, could we talk at some point? I'll let you kind of wake up first of course." Remus laughed nervously, and Sirius looked a little confused but nodded nonetheless.
"Yeah, okay, let me just get a drink real quick and then we can chat, yeah?" Sirius said, standing and stretching, Remus nodded and took a few deep breaths, remembering Lily's words. Sirius walked to the communal table and poured himself a glass of water from the cooler next to it before walking back to the sofa Remus was seated on and sat opposite him cross-legged.
"Okay, shoot." He said, not sounding even remotely nervous, meanwhile Remus felt like he was a second away from imploding.
"So, me and Lily were talking and, well, I didn't want to have to talk to you about this but she insisted I had to so, here I am, talking... to you... about... y'know, this." Remus mumbled and rambled.
"Rem, my darling, my favourite wolfie," Sirius spoke in a sickly sweet tone before speaking in a normally blunt voice "spit it out!"
"Fine! I... Well, it's just that, I think I like you? I mean, like more than in a friendly way, y'know? I just feel like we're closer than friends, and if you don't feel the same that's okay but I will really miss spending that close time with you because, well, it was really nice y'know?" Remus rambled again and Sirius just smiled, letting him speak.
"Finally" Sirius whispered, leaning in to close the gap between their lips which Remus was happy to do. After a moment the two of them pulled away and Remus had only one thing to ask.
"Finally?"
"You don't see me sleeping on James' lap, do you?" Sirius teased and Remus laughed a little.
"I suppose not"
For the first time in his life, Remus felt like maybe he was in one of his own stories, like maybe he could be the main character in a romance novel who after years finally finds them-self in love with their best friend. The novels he knew so well began to fade away in lieu of his own adventures and romance.
