Word count: 1376Remus suffered from a unique condition, it was called Lycanthropy and it was, regrettably, incurable. For years he suffered alone, his parents were the only ones who knew, and he always did his best to hide it but as he got older it got harder. Normally he would be chained in the soundproof basement alone until he was normal again, but when he moved to Hogwarts this was impossible. He would go to the forbidden forest on nights where the moon was full, and he simply had to pray that he didn't come out until he was normal again.
He grew violent in his werewolf form, he would injure himself and would awake the next day with horrible gashes all over him. This was when his friends began to be aware of his condition, the first time he was approached about it was by James, who asked him how he had been injured.
"Oh, I fell. I went on a walk in the forbidden forest, I thought I saw a thestral and I went to follow it but fell down a hill." Remus lied, for as long as he had been a werewolf there had only been two rules given to him by his parents; don't be near people on a full moon, and never tell anyone the truth.
"Nasty fall..." James sound, not sounding fully convinced.
"Yep, big hill." Remus said.
James finally gave up and walked off to find Lily, his crush, and no doubt make a fool of himself for her. Remus sighed and went up to the dorm to tend to his wounds, the most obvious of which was a large slice diagonally down his face. He cleaned it and used a few cut sterile strips to help it heal faster, he had to learn at a young age how to deal with cuts and wounds, and before he went to Hogwarts his father had him take a muggle first-aid class.
As he was tidying up and closing his little med kit, Sirius swaggered in, confident as ever. He strode over to his trunk and rummaged around for a minute before bringing out a chocolate bar, the expensive kind you could only get in muggle stores.
"Here! I got this for you when I went into London last month." Sirius said, handing Remus the chocolate. Remus looked down at it gleefully but then his expression turned slightly sad.
"I can't take this, these ones are expensive. I don't deserve that." Remus said, pushing the treat back towards Sirius, who scoffed and spoke in a hushed voice.
"Remus, every month you literally survive being a werewolf. I don't know anyone our age who could do that, take the fucking chocolate." Sirius said, smiling at the end. Remus almost choked on air and began to panic slightly.
"How do you know?!" He spluttered.
Sirius laughed and replied "research, Remus. Don't worry I won't tell James or Peter, but as your best friend, I took it upon myself to do some extra reading, and the fact you vanish every full moon and come back covered in injuries made it slightly obvious too. I figured it out a few months back, and I read somewhere chocolate helps, something about blood sugar." he shrugged.
"You... don't think any less of me? I was always told if anyone found out what I am I would be exiled..." Remus said, looking down at his hands.
"By who?! That's ridiculous, Rem. I'm your friend, so is James and so is Peter. None of us would think differently of you." Sirius spoke gently, his cocky act was completely gone and all that remained was a boy who knows what it's like to be scared and misunderstood, a boy who could relate to the werewolf.
"Promise?" Remus said quietly.
"Promise." Sirius smiled kindly. Remus sat down comfortably on his bed and began eating his chocolate, sharing it with Sirius despite his protests.
As the months turned to years and each moon began to meld together, one thing stayed constant. After the full moon, Sirius would always have a bar of chocolate ready, sometimes expensive and fancy, other times just a chocolate frog from Honeydukes. But if there was a full moon, it would be closely followed by chocolate and giggles.
"Okay, so, is this one better or worse than the one with that fizzy stuff in it?" Sirius asked, they began rating chocolates and trying new ones after a while, always with a backup bar in case it was vile.
"You mean the popping candy one? Uhhh I would say this one has a better texture, but no pizzazz so maybe worse but only slightly. Very good chocolate, just a bit basic." Remus replied, the two of them had apparently become chocolate critics over their years together.
"I see, so... about 34?" Sirius asked, referring to their ranking chart. They'd tried 63 types of chocolate all together and ranked them in a coherent list, dead last was some muggle thing, fiero rachel or something like that, both of them felt utterly ill afterwards.
"34 feels fair." Remus agreed.
They added it to the list before Sirius sighed and put down the pad and pen. He shuffled around one the bed so that he was facing Remus.
"Rem... I need to tell you something..." he said, looking more anxious than Remus had ever seen him.
"Okay, go ahead." Remus replied, smiling kindly and taking his hand.
"Well... it's just that I dont know... well... okay," he took a deep breath "I'm gay." He finally said, and Remus couldn't help but giggle slightly.
"Sirius, I know that. I'm bi, and trust me my gaydar was blaring around you." He grinned, laughing slightly at the end.
"Wait, you're bi? How did I not know this?" Sirius asked, now grinning back.
"I never really came out I guess, I sorta just started liking guys. I realised a few years ago, actually, you were the one who made me realise it at all. The way you treated me with such kindness when you found out about my condition. I had never been treated that way... I guess that's when I realised that maybe you meant more to me than I thought, and after a few weeks I realised I liked you." Remus admitted.
"liked? As in, past tense?" Sirius asked, just a little bit disappointed.
"Well, uh... I mean," Remus stuttered, not quite sure how to answer. He liked Sirius, but he didn't want to risk ruining their friendship or the dynamic between the four boys.
"No it's okay, I get it. I mean I'm not exactly a catch." Sirius smiled sadly, looking down at his hands.
Without thinking Remus plunged forward and joined lips with the long haired wizard. Sirius happily returned the kiss and put a hand on Remus' waist, this was the moment when James wandered in to check on Remus and caught them all over each other.
"Get a room!" He shouted, the two boys pulled apart and sat up properly.
"We're in our dorm room." Sirius pointed out, grinning as Remus blushed and covered his face.
"Eh good point. Well, keep the fucking to a minimum so me and Peter aren't traumatised." James joked as he walked over to his bed and plonked himself down on it.
"Wait," Remus said, now uncovering his face and looking to James "you don't care? Like, you don't care that we like guys, and moreover, each other?"
"Not really. I mean, Sirius is like a brother to me and I think we all knew he was gay, you were a bit more of a mystery but I've seen the way you look at him for years, I was able to piece it together." James shrugged.
This was the moment where for the first time in his life he realised his friends truly don't care. They didn't care he was a werewolf, they didn't care that he was bi, they just loved him for him. And from that moment on, he vowed that every time he felt lesser, or insecure, he would remember that his friends didn't care what he did, what he wore, who he loved, what he was and so neither should he.
