"I can't do it! I'm useless," Sirius groaned "I'll never get a date now."

"Mate, your chances were slim anyway, you smell like wet dog!" James cackled, bent over in fits of laughter at watching Sirius try to learn how to ballroom dance.

"Oh for merlins sake," Remus sighed, putting down his book which he had been trying to use to study for his NEWTs and stomping over to Sirius and speaking sternly "put your hand on my waist."

"Whoah, what are you-" Sirius began but was cut off with a yelp as Remus forcefully grabbed his hand, placing it on his waist before holding on to Sirius' shoulders. Sirius moved his other hand so it was grasping Remus' and they were in dancing position.

"Now move your right foot first, okay? one, two, three, one, two, three, one, two- See you're getting it. Just stop overthinking it." Remus interacted him, gently dancing him around the room. Peter and James watched on, laughing at the sight.

"Aw you two would make a cute couple! Mr and Mrs Dogface!" James howled in laughter, and Peter joined him. Remus blushed and backed away from Sirius, patting down his jumper awkwardly.

"Well. Just keep doing that, you'll be fine." Remus said before returning to his bed and opening his book up once again.

"Thanks Moony! Now I just need to find myself a date." Sirius sighed, collapsing back on to his own bed. Remus rolled his eyes but put his focus back in to studying.

Over the next couple of days Sirius would ask him for more practice, still trying to learn how to dance so he could impress whichever girl he was able to get to go with him to the ball. Remus would oblige, truthfully he just enjoyed being so close to his friend, their hands clasped together, their chests touching as they inhaled, their eyes locked as Remus guided him.

It was three days before the ball when they were gathered in the common room and Remus watched as Sirius attempted to woo Marlene McKinnon, his face must have shown his disgust as Lily approached him and wiggled her eyebrows.

"Someone feeling jealous?" Lily teased.

"What? No of course not. That's ridiculous, Sirius is just... a friend." Remus muttered, looking down at his book, and Lily turned serious.

"Remus, he's your best friend. But if you feel more than that you really should tell him." Lily said, placing a hand on Remus' shoulder.

Remus and Lily had been good friends for a while now, sometime during James' schemes and Remus apologising for his friend they had bonded, and Remus had to admit it was nice to have a friend outwith the group of marauders.

"Lily, I don't feel anything. He's just my friend, that's all." Remus responded, he wasn't sure how much of a lie it was, he wasn't madly in love with his best friend or anything but he found that Sirius was able to make him blush more than anyone else, and he did enjoy how Sirius looked in his quidditch jumper, and he loved how Sirius always brought him chocolate after a full moon. He would be lying if he said Sirius wasn't attractive, and he loved watching Sirius when he'd come in after class and throw his robes off, being sat in only his school slacks and tight white shirt with his tie loose. He became so lost in thought he didn't even notice when Sirius was in front of him, shouting about something, until Lily elbowed him in the ribs.

"... I just can't believe her! I mean she didn't even seem sorry about it!" Sirius ranted, and Lily rolled her eyes, before getting an idea, Remus recognised that look in her eye and could tell what was coming, he was just about to tell her not to when she spoke.

"Why don't you go with Remus? Y'know, as friends." Lily suggested, giving Remus a sly smile.

"Hey that's not a bad idea, what do you think moony? Wanna go to the dance with me?" Sirius grinned, and Remus blushed slightly. It wasn't exactly how he had wanted to be asked but it was a start.
