He hadn't meant to scare the boy, he really hadn't. It was just meant to be a simple prank, but now the boy was crying into his hands and Sirius felt awful.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to upset you, I just thought it would be funny to..." Sirius trailed off awkwardly, the boy looked up at him, his eyes were clogged with tears.
"Fuck you." The other boy spoke, his name was Remus, he was new to the school and had been sorted into Gryffindor, he'd been placed in a dorm with Sirius, Peter and James but they hadn't yet spoken to one another.
"Hey, come on I really didn't mean to-" Sirius began to try and defend himself but Remus cut him off once again.
"You never mean to, do you? I've only been here three weeks and already I can tell that you are a selfish, arrogant, cruel, self-obsessed, spoiled little rich boy with parents who will give you anything you want, and friends who will do anything you tell them to! Just leave me alone." Remus spat, Sirius frowned and nodded, walking away sadly.
He was in his 5th year at Hogwarts and had been friends with James and Peter since day one, they were a tight group, so when this new person came in to their dorm they were all a little hesitant. They decided to pull a prank on the boy, something they were sure would be completely harmless and that would have the boy laughing along with them, but it didn't go to plan at all.
Over the next few months Remus avoided Sirius at all costs, which was admittedly difficult being that they shared a dorm. But Sirius began to notice things about him, of the scars which covered him, a lot of them seemed fresher. These weren't self-inflicted, they couldn't have been. They littered his freckled skin, covering his arms, hands, face, neck. Everywhere.
Not only this, but he would vanish at night, not always. But every few weeks there would come a night where he would be absent from the dorm, sneaking back in in the early hours of the morning.
But every time without fail whenever Sirius would try to talk to him...
"I hate you."
"Remus please, I'm sorry I upset you but I'm trying to make things right now. I'm concerned about you, you're injured." Sirius pleaded with the boy, who had just stumbled in at 5:30am covered in fresh cuts, and walking with a limp now.
"I don't care. I can help myself." Remus said, his voice sounding just as broken as his body looked as he limped over to his bed, Sirius followed him over, determined to help.
"Please let me make it up to you. I can wrap your wounds, bring you food, anything." Sirius continued, and Remus sighed.
"You want to make it up to me, rich boy? Fine. Here's how you can make it up to me," Remus began, and Sirius thought he'd finally get a straight answer "Leave me alone."
"I can't do that. You're badly hurt, you might need stitches," Sirius spoke, and Remus flinched at the word "just please. Let me tend to your wounds at least."
Remus sighed, all the fight had left him, and nodded reluctantly. Sirius went over to his own trunk and pulled out a first aid kit, he slowly began getting to work on Remus' wounds, and he was right there was one that did need stitches, it was far deeper than the rest and was about halfway up his leg. When Sirius pulled out the needle and medical thread he saw Remus visibly flinch, and his breathing began to quicken.
"Are you afraid of needles?" Sirius asked quietly, and Remus nodded, Sirius brought his hand close to Remus'.
"May I?" Sirius asked, and Remus nodded again. Sirius took Remus by the hand and looked into his eyes.
"You'll be alright, I won't hurt you. If you need me to pause you can ask and I will, but it will go much faster if you just close your eyes and think of something else, alright?" Sirius spoke, Remus, against his better judgement, squeezed his hand before speaking shakily.
"Alright."
Sirius began to get to work on sewing up the wound, Remus' breath was quick and uneasy, but he did as Sirius said and kept his eyes shut, letting his mind wander as much as he could. Thankfully, though deep, the wound was not large so Sirius was able to make quick work of it, finishing the stitches within just a couple of minutes.
"There. That should be you all set." Sirius said, packing away his supplies back into his first aid pack.
"Thank you." Remus said, quietly, as though it were difficult for him to say.
"So... Am I forgiven?" Sirius asked, a crooked smile on his lips.
"I suppose we can try to be friends." Remus spoke, still sounding uncertain.
"Well as your friend, I promise to tend to your wounds whenever you need. Especially if they need stitches." Sirius grinned, and Remus felt his heart warm a little.
This truly was the beginning of something beautiful.
