xviii. Freedom

The life of royalty was hard and tiring, but I loved it. I loved making decisions that would better my nation, I loved helping my people. The life of freedom however, was much better. It was easy and people didn't expect anything from me, I could express myself freely with no consequences.

I had told Lin that I loved her on the dawn of her eighteenth birthday, and a smile played on her lips. That wasn't the beginning of us, not at all. We had always been together through thick and thin, she had always been by my side and I adored her for that. We may not have always been in love, but I loved her. 

I was allowed to kiss my girlfriend on the lips with nobody yelling at me to keep my image clear. I could make relationship jokes with Izumi. I was also allowed to watch my sister marry the love of her life. Eventually she welcomed the newest member of our family into the world. Ensuring that the Fire Nation would continue to grow and be strong. 

It was years before I was able to wrap my arms around Lin's waist as Aang pronounced us wed. It was years before I was able to help the next avatar, a young girl named Korra. 

I knew I was loved, especially by Lin Beifong.
