Madd
The first thing I noticed when I looked through the window that morning was the world covered in a thin layer of snow. Everything seemed so peaceful and serene.
It almost seemed like waking up in a winter wonderland. The sun made the snow glitter and it wouldn't last long before the kids would start playing and building snowmen.
It could make your day, waking up to this beautiful sight as long as you didn't actually have to go out. Fuck, I hated winter when I couldn't stay cooped up in my bed with some hot coco. I wasn't a person who could function well in the cold and I'd probably fall on my butt because the world just turned into a dangerous place.
Gorgeous to look at when you were inside and warm. Horrible to actually conquer it.
Today was the day of my 'school trip'. Reid had made it seem like my school was going on an excursion for a few days so my mom wouldn't start asking questions as to why I wasn't home. Today was the day I'd meet my new foster mom.
I was nervous. Sage wouldn't give me too much details about her stay there a few years ago and I didn't push it because she seemed traumatised by the whole ordeal. I stupidly volunteered but I knew I had to do this. Not just for her but for all the foster kids.
My revenge had been way easier than hers. I was gonna go visit Mike in a few weeks and just the thought made me wanna skip around the room. For now, I had to help Sage. She'd been there to help me and I'd return the favor.
I sauntered downstairs to get some breakfast. As expected, mom had left me a note on the kitchen table. She had to leave early for work and she'd have to miss me a few days. Our relationship was still a little rocky, I could tell she didn't fully trust me yet but we were getting there.
Sweet Maddison, have fun on your trip! There's some fruit in the fridge to eat with your breakfast. Would you mind getting the mail, honey? I'll see you in a few days. Love, mom
I shuddered at the thought of going outside to get the mail even though it was only a few feet. I decided to eat my breakfast first and then I'd start layering my clothes.
Half an hour later I looked ridiculous but at least I wouldn't freeze when I'd go outside. The cold wind greeted me like an old enemy when I opened the door and I decided to sprint to the mailbox and sprint back inside. That was the plan until my foot hit something.
I looked down and screamed at the top of my lungs. I quickly took a step backwards and closed the door. I tried to focus on my breathing because I was panting and my heart was about to explode. I franctically grabbed my phone and called Sage.
"Hello Madd, we're meeting at two, right?" Sage answered her phone.
"S-Sage. You have to come over." I breathed. I could feel the tears coming all of a sudden and I realised I was having a meltdown.
Sage seemed to notice immediately even though she couldn't see me. "I'll be there in ten. Hang in there!" She said before she hung up the phone.
I hadn't moved from my spot near the front door. My coat was still on and I was grasping at my phone as if my life depended on it. I hadn't failed to notice I was shaking like a leaf.
Ten minutes later I hestitantly opened the door again and I could see Sage at the end of the street. The moment she saw me, she started running towards me.
Before she could say anything, I pointed at the brown paper bag in front of me. I couldn't look at it again. When I closed my eyes, the content of the bag appeared before me.
Sage looked down and grabbed the bag. I noticed her breath intake when she looked inside.
"That's my cat." I said, my voice barely above a whisper.
