1977
As usual my Monday morning started with potions class. For once I was early and took my usual seat in the back. When Regulus entered the class I expected him to sit next to me like last time, but without even looking my way he sat down at his old bench. I guess now that we’ve finished the essay he was done with his niceties and I was back to sitting alone. Balance had been restored. After classes I went to the library to catch up on some work and to write a reply to my father. Normally I would be much quicker with my reply, but this time more than ever I had nothing to write about. I contemplated making up some elaborate story about how much fun I was having this year but decided against it. Even my father isn't thick enough to believe that. Then just like months ago Regulus strided into the library and took a seat directly in my eyeline. It was as if he was trying to taunt me, but I wouldn't give him the satisfaction. I made sure my eyes were glued to the parchment before me, even when it somehow felt like he was looking right at me.
A little while later two hands covered my eyes, ‘Guess who.’ I recognised the voice immediately ‘Zaina, and I’m guessing Adeola too.’ Zaina removed her hands from my face, ‘No she’s too busy with, Diggory.’ She took the seat next to me. ‘So, you didn’t feel like joining them then?’ ‘No, I went looking for you so we could have dinner together. I can’t stand having to hear him talk about magical creatures anymore. It’s like who even cares about Hippogriffs. Adeola used to hate animals but now, she’s even talking about working at the department for the regulation and control of magical creatures. If love changes you that much, I don’t want it.’ Zaina ranted.
I quietly giggled, ‘Imagine Adeola working with creatures. I just think she’s in the honeymoon stage, give her a month or two and she'll be back to her normal self.’ ‘Since when are you so wise when it comes to relationships?’ ‘When you have Marlene Mckinnon as a best friend, you learn loads especially about relationships.’
‘Aha, so how was working with broody over there?’ Zaina asked while motioning to Regulus. I looked up to see him reading a book, ‘It was fine.’ ‘Just fine then? Adeola and I had imagined you and him would become the best of friends. You’re quite similar, you know, both intelligent and loners.’ She said with a wink. ‘Except, I'm basically a muggleborn, while he’s a part of a family of blood purists. And hey, I’m not a loner, I just don’t mind being alone, there’s a difference.’ ‘Yeah, yeah, so dinner then?’ ‘Yeah sure, I could use a break from Sirius and Marlene too.’ I started to gather my stuff, while Zaina already left to wait for me in the corridor. Before leaving I looked one last time at Regulus’ table, to find him staring right at me. I smiled at him, which he returned, but then I just left. It’s not like I expected us to become friends but going back to being strangers felt strange.
