1997
With only a day left before the yule ball, I was somewhat nervous. I didn’t know why, it wasn’t my first ball, but it was my last one with Marlene. I kept telling myself I needed to enjoy it to its fullest but the pressure was getting to my head and I felt like I was going to throw up. Maybe this was my ticket out of the ball, but I realised I can’t back out. Especially after I spent a fortune on my dress, not that Marlene would ever let me back out. Even if I puked over the whole dancefloor, she wouldn’t let me leave. So I pushed away my nerves and went on with my day. It seemed like I wasn’t the only one with jitters, as the only thing everyone talked about all day was the ball.

‘So hair up or down?’ Adeola asked Zaina and I as we walked from one classroom to another. ‘With your dress’ neckline, definitely up, make sure to add some volume though.’ ‘How are you going to do your hair, Zaina?’ ‘Probably down with some pieces pinned back for sure. May we know your hairstyle or is that a secret too, Eira?’ I shrugged, ‘I haven’t made my mind up yet on what I’m going to do with it.’ ‘So you’re going to the ball then?’ I looked to my left to see Regulus walking next to me. Adeola and Zaina looked at eachother with wide eyes and suddenly started walking quicker, leaving me behind with Regulus.

‘Uh yes, how about you?' I asked to be polite. 'Might swing by, didn't really think you'd be the ball kind of girl.' 'Oh, and you think you have me all figured out after about three conversations.' I rolled my eyes at him and quickened my pace to catch up to Adeola and Zaina but unfortunately Regulus did the same.

‘Why are you being so rude?’ ‘I’m rude? You’re the one that left me at the owlery and has been ignoring me ever since. And now you’re all up in my business and I have to act nice. Regulus, did your mum and dad not teach you any manners? Or was their education only centered around blood purity.’ I apparently hit a snare because Regulus grabbed my arm and dragged me to the side of the corridor, ‘Don’t ever talk about my family again, you have no idea what they’re like.’ I looked straight into his eyes, ‘What because my mom’s a muggle? You’re so short sighted if you think only your family has problems. Now let me go before I start screaming my head off.’ He gave me a look and let my arm fall from his hand.

I shoved him out of my way and quickly joined Adeola and Zaina at the end of the corridor, who had been watching us with wide eyes. ‘What was that?’ Zaina quickly asked. ‘He’s an ass, let’s just get to class before Mcgonagal has our heads.’

I skimmed my eyes over the daily prophet while eating my lunch. Everyday more disappearances and murders were reported. The war was looming over us, at least we’ll be safe at Hogwarts.

‘Any good news?’ Marlene asked while coming up behind me and giving me a peck on the cheek. ‘Besides the Holyhead Harpies winning a game, not really. The news is quite gloomy these days.’ Marlene frowned, ‘It really makes me want to do something, help in some way.’ ‘Look out Marls, your Gryffindor boyfriend is rubbing off on you.’ I teased. ‘He’s not my boyfriend, Eira. I just mean to say I want to come out of this war saying I fought among the right side.’ ‘Okay, miss Auror.’ ‘Eira, you shouldn’t joke about this, it’s serious.’ ‘No, I’m Sirius.’ I laughed at Sirius, who had just arrived at our table. ‘I literally cannot deal with you two right now.’ Marlene said while placing her head in her hands. ‘Come on, Marlene, the ball’s tomorrow, you can go back to worrying afterwards.’
