A/N: I know this is a Spelivia book but I couldn't resist writing something about Spencer and Dillon. This chapter is the longest one I've written for this book so brace yourselves, thanks for reading!
Dillon was growing up faster than Spencer would have liked. Spencer still wanted him to be that little brother that wanted nothing more than to be just like Spencer but at 17, Dillon was quickly proving that the younger of the James boys was his not afraid to walk to the beat of his own drum. With Spencer in college, it was rare for the two of them to get one on one time together so when Liv flew to Atlanta to visit Simone, and Jordan headed to Coastal California to visit JJ, Spencer knew that he needed to go visit his little brother.
Dillon looked up, locking eyes with his brother, as he heard the front door open.
"Hey." Dillon greeted, barely looking up from his phone.
"Hey." Spencer greeted back, trying not to be discouraged when Dillon returned his focus to his phone. "You busy today?"
Dillon finally gave Spencer his attention, "Nah, was just going to hang around the house today."
Spencer smiled before grabbing his keys and heading towards the front door, "Let's go." He called back to Dillon, never telling him where they were going.
The brothers had the chance to converse over lunch since whatever Spencer had planned wasn't happening for a few more hours. Spencer had let Dillon steer the conversation, wanting to know more about what had changed in his brother's life when Dillon caught him off guard with a question.
"Spence, how do you know if you're in love?"
Spencer knew that his face probably showed absolute shock, but he quickly recovered.
"Well, I think it may be different for other people than it was for me." Spencer said, placing his fork down and giving Dillon his undivided attention. "With Liv, I always had love for her. From the day I met her, I knew she was different from any other person I'd ever met. She saw the best in people, even when they didn't deserve it. She truly held the best interest for people, even if they didn't hold that for her in return. She loved people in the most genuine way I've ever encountered, she still does. It was easy to love Olivia." Spencer explained, smiling as he thought of his girl.
"But when did you know you were in love?" Dillon pried, urgency lacing his voice.
Spencer looked Dillon in his eyes, the importance of the conversation starting to set in.
"I realized I was in love with Olivia the summer after I got shot." Spencer began. "We had spent so much time together, supporting each other through one of the most traumatic moments of our lives, I started to enjoy her company more than anyone else's. When we went to Vegas, I finally realized that I was in love with her. I looked at her and saw everything that I ever wanted in her eyes. In that moment I knew that Liv was the one. It felt like I got hit by a truck," Spencer realized the look that was on his brothers face all too well. Dillon had found her; he'd found his Liv. "I had convinced myself for two years that we were just friends, that the way that I loved her was the way that I loved Patience or the way I loved Simone, but it wasn't." Spencer leaned closer to Dillon across the table. "From the moment I realized I was in love, I've never loved another woman the way that I love Olivia, and to be completely honest with you, I never will."
Dillon seemed to be taking it all in, still silent, but now seeming reassured.
"Spence, how did Liv know?" Dillon asked as they made their way out of the restaurant and into the car. "She's always loved you, but how'd she know when she was in love?"
Spencer chuckled as he clicked onto the screen in the center of his car. Olivia's contact appeared sitting at the top of his recent calls and he selected it without an ounce of hesitation.
