I limp over to the elevator pressing the button as I wait, my brain on the other hand can't stop thinking about Nicholas and his past. I don't know why I care so much or why I'm fighting the urge to just go and ask, but I am. Everything sane about me is telling me that there's no way he has any sort of compassion or even a fragment in which he could possibly care about anyone but himself, sad thing is I don't have much of me that is sane I'm afraid, so I'm left in hole of constantly spiralling with him on my mind. What if there's more to him, I know what it's like to lose a mother but with Larry's description of Nicholas's I doubt compassion is the most fit way to approach him about it.
"How's your leg"
I almost break my neck as I spin to the voice behind me, Max. He smiles, genuinely that is with a quick look at my thigh that leaves him looking back to me with sadness.
"You my friend need to take a second to relax" he chuckles making me ease my tensed body.
"I'm fine"
He nods completely not buying into that "are you gonna make it to the party?"
"Party?" I frown looking up at him, he's not as tall as Nicholas but there's also not much of a difference and for a split moment my brain lags because they sort of look related.
"I thought he was joking with the whole 'Look at her, talk to her, even breath too close to her and I'll send your remains to whatever family you have left'. Glad to know that was real"
"He said what now?"
"One thing about Bane is he's as subtle as a drunk man walking a straight line" he chuckles, "but he did it because he cares so there's that"
"Please" I laugh turning to face him now "a starving dog would care more about me than he ever could"
"For someone so logical you really are dumb"
"I never said I was logical" he gives me that 'shut the actual fuck up' look.
The elevator finally gets here saving me from this annoying conversation, as it open though a brightly dressed blondie is standing there with heels bigger than the length of a fucking shotgun on a phone call to someone.
"I'm telling you this fucking elevator is cursed I pressed for floor twenty and it took me to a whole other dimension" she wines stomping her feet on the floor making her many layered jewellery shake and knot together, that alone makes me cringe inside.
I hate this more than I hate talking to Max, we walk in standing as far in the back as possible but something is up, I just can't put my finger on it but there's this weird tension between them it's kind of entertaining.
"Ugh give me a second JJ" she spins around not sparing me a glance but instead faces Max with hatred plastered all over her face, I knew something was up.
"He said twenty right?"
"Uhhh..." he drags on with his eyes wide open, his arms tense as it rests behind him holding onto the metal railing.
"What, did you lose your tongue since the last time I was here or something? like speak"
"I don't know"
"You're literally besties with him and he said be there before nine, you know he doesn't like it when people are late so help a girl out Maxie-Max" her eyes flutter as she grins, she's not ugly, in fact she's pretty as hell it's just the countless layers of everything isn't helping her stand out at all.
I have a feeling I know who's she's talking about and I feel like crashing this elevator with all of us inside, Max's eyes land on me but I can't even look at him, he knows I was right.
"Are you looking for Bane" the name seems foreign to me but who was I kidding thinking he wasn't a total dickhead.
She finally realizes I exist, her glittered pink eyes scan me entirely and all I can think of is slamming her head between the metal doors "and who are you" bitch please.
"I'm his assistant" I smile as I watch her whole character changes right before me from trying to be scary all the way to a needy and suddenly friendly girl that now needs my help.
"Oh well in that case, help a girl out?"
"Of course, last time I checked he's on the twenty-fifth, you just passed it"
"Fuck, thanks anyway you're a real life saver" she giggles giving Max a nasty look but then just like that completely turns around getting back to her phone call.
"JJ honey you already know that when I get a job, I complete it well, plus you really think he'd want me for the fourth time if I didn't leave some sort of good reaction?" She giggles at something the other girl is saying "that's what I'm saying, and he's lucky because tonight I'm feeling it more than usual"
The elevator stops and I walk out as soon as it opens, one more second in there and god only knows what I would've crawled out through the fire escape hatch.
"Mia" Max calls, I turn around to tell him to fuck off but stop to see that he isn't following me. Instead he's peeking over the corner keeping the elevator doors from shutting "party is at ten, I have clothes from girls that left them at mine so if you don't have anything to wear it's on the fifth floor room 391 it'll be opened so help yourself"
"Max let the fucking elevator close you annoying shit" bimbo yells.
"Shut up for once in your life" he looks back at me annoyed as ever but still gives me a smile to which I can't help but return "oh and they're all clean don't worry" he hops back in letting the elevator finally close but that doesn't stop the screaming from her reaching me, we'll see if Max is alive after that.
I just personally want a shower .... and maybe a plugged in toaster with it.
