❝She's definitely a child prodigy.❞
❝Yeah, but she's not as good as that one kid from Kitagawa Dachii...❞
❝Well, she is a girl after all.❞
The brunette caught the volleyball in her hands as the words kept repeating in her mind. What do her abilities at volleyball have to do with her being a girl? People praise her and compliment her and then almost always follow it up with for a girl. What's the point of that? What does her gender have to do with her talent as a setter? She can set just as good as any guy, just as good as him. She'd just need a chance to prove it.
She threw the ball up in the air again and received it cleanly, then continuing to bounce it up and down on her arms in a steady rhythm.
Playing with and against the girls was fun and all, but it got stale pretty easily. When you win 85% of the time it's only natural that you'd want to find a new challenge. She always wondered what it would be like to play against the boys. Against some of the most talented players in the prefecture. Against Oikawa, maybe even against Ushijima... nah, he's too scary. But she definitely wants to play against him, the king of the court.
As she daydreamed the ball hit her arm in the wrong angle and suddenly it went flying into another direction. Her brown eyes widened and she jumped up, trying to follow the ball.
"Oh, crap!" She cursed out loud as the ball went flying across the school yard. But before it could touch the ground, an orange blur ran past her and before she could react, a short boy stood before her and caught the ball in his arms with an excited smile.
The brunette girl stayed still in shock, blinking rapidly as the boy ran up to her and held the ball out to her with the same smile he had before. He was so small, but he was so fast. And most importantly, where did he come from all of the sudden?
"Thank you." She took the ball from him, the expression on her face confused, yet slightly curious. She expected him to leave after he handed her the ball, but he stayed and looked at her like a curious cat, which bugged her a whole lot. She didn't like it when people stared at her, especially this intense.
"Do you play volleyball?" He asked eventually.
The girl nodded, hugging the ball to her stomach, "I'm on the girl's team."
At that his eyes widened in excitement and the smile on his face grew bigger, if that was even possible. "I'm on the boy's team! I'm Hinata Shoyo!" He held out his hand towards her.
"Yoshikawa Kagami," she replied, shaking the hand purely out of politeness, "What position do you play?"
"Middle blocker!"
The girl swear dropped. She expected him to play any position but middle blocker, well mostly Libero, but even wing spiker would have made more sense to her. "Aren't you a bit short to be a middle blocker?"
The short boy immediately took offence to that, his face growing red in anger. "Hey! I can jump pretty high!" He defended, although Kagami wasn't sure if she should believe what he had said. Hinata shook his head and turned the question around, "What position do you play?"
"I'm a setter."
At that moment she could swear she saw his hazel eyes light up with little stars inside of them. He excitedly stepped closer to her, his body full of anticipation as he started to jump up and down with a bright grin.
"Set for me!"
"No."
As fast as the boy got his hopes up, they got crushed. The boy landed defeated on the ground, a frown on his face and an imaginary rain cloud above his head.
"Why not?" He asked with pleading puppy eyes, and if anyone but Kagami stood before him right now they probably would have worked too. She only glared at him however, it was the same look Kageyama often gave him. Now that he thought about it, she sounded like him a bit as well, not in the way her voice sounded, but in the way she talked. Maybe the two were twins that got separated at birth or something... Two Kageyamas, that was a scary thought. He can't even deal with one, let alone two.
With a huff the brunette turned around to walk away from the short boy, the ball now stuck underneath her arm. "I don't just set to anyone. Besides the lunch break is almost over. I need to go back to class."
She went to walk away, trying to leave Hinata behind, but he just kept following her for some reason she didn't understand. Was that all because he wanted her to set for him? He was so persistent, didn't he have a setter on his team? She was sure that Michimiya-senpai mentioned at least one while talking and gushing about Sawamura during practice.
Hinata caught up with her and walked besides Kagami, "What year are you in?"
"I'm a first year," she simply replied.
He beamed at her, "Me too."
"Yeah, figures." She mumbled, while mentioning to his height, but the ginger decided to ignore that insult for now.
"What class are you in?"
"1-4."
"I'm in 1-1. I have some teammates in your class. Tsukshima and Yamaguchi. Do you know them?"
Kagami shrugged, "I don't talk to a lot of people in my class."
Hinata looked at her curiously, "Is that why you're practicing on your own during lunch?"
"I suppose..." She mumbled, readjusting the ball underneath her arm. She didn't think about it that much, but now that he mentioned it, she didn't talk to a lot of people in school. She supposed there was Yachi, a girl she was in class with in middle school and exchanged a few words with when they'd see each other, and Kaede, another first year that joined the club as middle blocker, but other than that she hadn't talked to many others outside of it. To be fair she didn't do it in middle school either, if anything it's just her falling into old habits.
"You can practice with me from now on!"
Kagami stopped in her tracks and turned to look at the boy, who only smiled brightly at her. He really was just like a giant ball of energy and sunshine. It was really annoying, but she can't help but find it nice that he offered to practice with her, even if he probably did it for his own gain. She took a deep breath and continued to walk back to class, "I'm not setting for you."
Hinata only smiled and nodded, "Alright. See you tomorrow Yoshikawa-san!"
