When Harumi Majima was in middle school she had a lot of friends. It's not that she was particularly smart or good at anything, but she was friendly and kind. She was the kind of girl that couldn't say no to other people, the kind of girl that always smiled, the kind of girl people went to when they needed something. It was superficial in a way, but Harumi didn't mind, she liked being needed and belonging somewhere. But once she got into high school things had changed...
Most of the people she knew had decided to go to different schools after graduating middle school. They still kept in touch sometimes, but it was clear they had their own lives going on. The first few weeks at Karasuno were lonely, she got along well enough with her classmates, but she didn't connect well enough with them. When someone had asked her to hang out after class she had to decline, because well another thing had happened between going to middle school and high school, her mother had started undergoing treatment at the hospital for an illness and her father now had to work twice as hard to keep paying for their food and the roof over their heads. So, whenever she wasn't at school, she was either at the hospital with her mother, working a small part time job of babysitting kids to help out her father or at home catching up on schoolwork.
When it was time to choose a club she hesitated, in middle school she was doing whatever her friends were doing, she thought about not joining a club at all, but clubs were heavily encouraged for first year students, so the question was what was she going to do in high school? She didn't think volleyball would be the answer, but it was one of the only clubs that still accepted members once she decided she should join something and she remembered her mother once telling her that she used to play when she was her age. So, she decided to do that, but she wasn't very good at it, but still she kept at it, because well...
"Majima!" Kagami's voice rang through the gym. Harumi took a deep breath and took a running approach to the net, before jumping to hit the set. The ball hit her hand almost automatically and then landed on the other side of the court.
Their new hopefully soon-to-be coach Tatsumi was watching from the sidelines as the girls played rotating three on three matches, at the moment the first years were playing against some of the second years, while the third years watched, refereed and kept the score.
