❝When I was in middle school people would always talk about this boy and how amazing as a setter he was. At first I thought they talked about Oikawa-san, he was the best I knew, but he went on to Highschool and the people still kept talking.
Then during my second year I finally saw him and I quickly understood why people talked about him. His sets were quick and precise, his form was clean and he didn't make any unnecessary movements. Not to mention his serves were powerful and could, with a little bit more control, be very terrifying.
He was everything I was; only slightly better. I loathed him so much. As I watched him play the people were impressed beyond measure. From that moment on I wanted to show everyone that I was just as good, if not better than him. I swore that to myself, but in the end I never got to, at least in middle school...❞
Ennoshita entered the gym that morning as usual, greeting his teammates with a smile. Most everyone was already there, Tanaka was running a little late as he often did, but other than him everyone was already there, stretching and preparing.
His little sister Kaede quickly followed behind him, a smile also on her face as she greeted the older members with familiarity and the new first years with curious energy. And a little bit behind the blonde was lonesome Kagami, who didn't know anyone on the team, or seemingly so.
"Yoshikawa-san!" The tiny middle blocker named Hinata Shoyo ran up to her with an excited smile.
Everyone else turned to look at the pair. They were stunned by the fact that those two were friends. Kaede especially was surprised since she knew Kagami to be extremely antisocial sometimes, so to see her with such a ball of sunshine was mind boggling to her. The boys team weren't that surprised, considering that Hinata likes to make friends with anything with a pulse, no matter how hard they try to resist. He did it with Nekoma's setter and now he did it with her. He was just that loveable.
The brunette girl stood by the entrance of the gym and took of her street shoes before changing into her gym shoes. "Hello, Hinata-kun."
"Why are you here?" He asked, then he began to jump up and down excitedly, "Did you come here to see my super awesome fast attack?"
"Uhm, not really," she replied and Hinata visibly deflated, making her sigh internally, "But you can show it to me if you like..."
His face lit up, "Yes!" He said excitedly, then he turned to run out to the court. "Kageyama! Toss to me!"
The female setter stopped in her tracks. "Kageyama?" She repeated, hoping that she had heard him wrong, but knowing her luck she probably hadn't. There was no way that he would be here with this sorry excuse of a team, surely. With his skill and talent he must have gone to Seijou or Shiratorizawa. He had too. There was no way he would go to Karasuno just like her, that would be the worst possible scenario ever.
But low and behold the tall, dark haired, handsome setter appeared, a ball in his hands and his usual glare on his face. It's like he didn't change at all from the last time she saw him. It pissed her off. How can someone be so good at volleyball and so handsome at the same time? It's not fair.
"What the hell are you doing here?" Slipped past her lips without much thought and everyone turned to look at her in shock and surprise, seeing as her tone of voice drastically changed from the apathetic one she used before and they didn't expect her to know anyone else in the team besides Hinata. Kageyama only blinked in confusion, while everyone stared at the two.
"...Huh?" He was very much confused as to why this random girl he never even talked to was so angry at him. He tried to remember if he met her once before, but she didn't seem familiar to him at all.
In the background Tsukishima could be seen smiling in amusement, Yamaguchi next to him also struggling to hold in a laugh. "What did you do this time, king?" The blond asked teasingly.
"You know her, Kageyama?" Hinata added from next to the setter.
"I don't think so," he replied scratching at his head, and he wasn't lying. He didn't know her. He didn't talk to a lot of people during middle school, especially girls, so he would probably remember if he had met or seen her.
Kagami's face fell as she heard him say that. Kageyama didn't have any idea who she was. That's so embarrassing. All this time she thought of him as her rival, the one she had to beat to prove she was worth something, but he didn't even know her. A dark cloud appeared over her head in disappointment, sadness and probably embarrassment, "...you don't know who I am?"
"Not really."
That was the last hit, as Kagami's soul officially left her body for a few seconds. Everyone else who was watching the scene felt bad for the brunette, except for Tsukishima who was trying to contain his laughter. The third years, Sugawara especially, felt like they should intervene before this whole ordeal got out of hand, but before anyone could say anything, Kagami jumped back on to her feet, her index finger pointing at the dark haired setter.
"I'm Yoshikawa Kagami!" She whined, hoping that maybe he had heard or read her name somewhere before, "Best female setter in the prefecture! People used to compare us all the time in middle school!" She explained, but Kageyama stayed silent, not a single reaction on his face.
Kagami sighed and dropped her arms, her last ditch effort was a fail. Kaede walked up to her and patted her back, a comforting smile on her face. "There. There. It's not the end of the world. Let's just practice, yeah?"
"No." Kagami pushed Kaede's hand off her back and looked up at Kageyama again, sending a glare his way. "I spend my entire middle school career being compared to you! I always tried to one up you and I never succeeded! I tried and I tried, and you- you always won."
Everyone stayed silent after that, Kageyama especially.
He didn't know what to think. First she comes in here, all buddy-buddy with Hinata, and then she starts angrily accusing him of things he has no control over. Still, he strangely somewhat understood what she was feeling. It wasn't the same, but he guessed the feelings he had towards Oikawa were close enough to those she had for him.
The overwhelming need to surpass him, the need to show that she can be just as good if not better than him. She seemed to be very emotional towards this topic. He can't say that he has been giving his nearly as much thought as she has after the practice match they had against Seijou. The Interhigh was weeks away, and even then it wasn't sure if they would be playing against each other again...
Regardless of that, he didn't really have the time or the interest to entertain her stupid rivalry she made up in her head. His hands balled together in fists for a moment, then he turned away towards the court and started to walk away from the two girls. "That's not my fault."
