A week and a half passed and the wedding rehearsals had been pleasurable... well, aside from Antonio's animals barging inside the church or minor arguments between Pepa and Abuela. It was still fun!
When we had everything memorized and drilled into our brains by Pepa-- from the walks down the aisle to the speeches, the rest of the week was later planned for decorating. It was a weekend and I sat in the empty nursery room. I cleaned around the beds and reorganized the children's diapers and clothes.
"There." I sighed to myself when I heard my name being called from down the corridor. My ears perked at the sound of Mrs. Perez making her way to me.
"Y/n, could you be so kind and bring this to the Madrigal's?" She had asked, holding up a foil tray of food in her arms. My eyes widened and I combed my fingers through my hair.
"Uh--"
"Tell them it's a small thank you gift for entitling you as one of their Bridesmaids." She winked and I laughed,
"Oh, Mrs. Perez." I said and nodded, taking up the duty. "I'm sure they'll enjoy this." I said and the thin older woman gave me a warm smile,
"Now, hurry on." She shoved the tray into my arms and I giggled as she playfully kicked me out of the nursery room. I later realized that the reason why she showed so much gratitude lately towards the Madrigal's was because they helped me come out of the comfort zone of being stuck in the orphanage. I eventually made my way to the front door and Mrs. Perez saw me out before I stepped foot into the busy afternoon village.
The baker from across the orphanage greeted me with a tilt of his head and I replied with a smile. Before I was about to walk in the direction of the Madrigal's home, something caught my eyes at a booth. I saw a young woman and her daughter selling some handmade accessories. I scanned my surroundings and headed over to their shop. Their eyes shined when they saw a customer approaching.
"Hello!" The little girl says joyfully. I smiled and adjusted the foil tray in my arms.
"Hello."
"Are you looking for anything specific, dear?" The young mother asked in a comforting voice. I just shook my head,
"Just lookin'." I replied and they nodded,
"Well, if you're interested, we have a new item that we launched not too long ago!" The woman says and nods to her child to retrieve the accessory. The little girl in pigtails giggles and picks up a pink bow.
"This is my favorite! My mom made mine blue." She says as I leaned in closer to see how absolutely gorgeous it was. My eyes widened at the thought of Mirabel with it on. It definitely matched the bridesmaids dress! I nodded at the shop keepers,
"I'll take one!"
The sky was a bit gloomy, maybe something got onto Pepa's nerves? I stared up at the sky and before I knew it I came upon Casita who flapped its window shutters to greet me.
"Hello! How are you, Casita?" I laughed even though I saw it just yesterday. Casita's tiles bounced in reply and I smiled just as it opened the door for me. I entered the Madrigal's home with the large quantity of food in my arms. My eyes spotted Dolores up ahead, comforting her mother over something that happened shortly before I arrived.
"Oh! Y/n, what a surprise!" Dolores gasped with a peep and scurried to me, leaning in a little in my personal space, "Have you seen Camilo? He knows how to handle Mama better than I do." She admits quietly. I shook my head, glancing over Dolores's shoulder to see Pepa sighing in frustration.
"No, I haven't seen him today. He's usually helping the village with their chores." I shrugged and her doll-like eyes widened in deep thought.
"If you don't mind me asking, what happened?" I asked in a low whisper. Dolores sighed a little,
