"What do you think?" Camilo crossed his arms over his chest the next day as I stood in front of him, staring at a book he tossed to me. The title read: The Joker and the Queen
We stood in the kitchen of the orphanage as I observed the book impressed with the chosen story. I flipped through the pages and took a glimpse at the end with curiosity in my eyes when suddenly Camilo closed the book.
"Hey, just because I gave you the book to read, you shouldn't mistreat it like that." He eyed me playfully and I laughed as he opened it to the first page, "Start here." He said strictly and I found it amusing that he was irritated by me reading the ending of the book. I smiled up at him teasingly,
"I was joking! Now what do you need me to do? Set up the stage or something? Assign the characters to the children?--"
"I need you to be the Queen." He interrupted me softly. "And I'll be the Joker." I did a double-take, from the book cover to him and I quickly shook my head,
"Uh, I don't specialize in acting, Camilo." I laughed, but he didn't find it funny. He held our gaze and pointed at the book,
"This was the first book I stumbled upon, the day I got my room-- my gift. When I was old enough to understand the meaning of this story, I realized how similar it was to us-- my point is, I need you to be the Queen, Y/n, please." He begged gently. I thought about it and by the look of his face, he really wanted me to play the part. I bit my lip as I glanced down at the book in my hands,
"Camilo, I don't think I'm the best fit--"
"Fine." He says gloomily and looks away, "I didn't want to do this, but I guess I have no choice but to ask that mail girl... I'm sure she wouldn't mind taking the role of the Queen." He glanced over at me to see my reaction, and it was enough to satisfy him. I narrowed my eyes at him, the look of confusion and jealousy crept on my face.
The mail girl? Since when--
"FINE! I'll play the Queen-- but who is this mail girl?" I heaved as Camilo cracked a smile. He quickly pulled together his act, being all gloomy again.
"Aw, gee. I don't know Y/n, now that I think about it, maybe you aren't such a good fit afterall--"
Infuriated, I gave him back the book with a stamp of my foot. I mumbled something under my breath, getting ready to step out of the kitchen when I heard Camilo laughing with pleasure. As I turned my back he wrapped his arms around me, pulling me back. I rolled my eyes,
"Ugh, Camilo--"
"Aw, cheer up! I'll just let her know she won't be casted." He laughs in my ear as he slipped the book back into my arms. I flushed with anger the fact that I hadn't realized that he had been talking to someone else... He's joking, right?
"So you'll be the Queen?" He asked and I fell silent. He tightened his arms around me and laid his chin on my shoulder. "Hm?"
I turned my head away as my cheeks tinted pink. "Mm-hmm." I hummed and he smiled from ear to ear.
"Perfect! Just memorize your lines and I'll memorize mine. We also need to gather the kids--"
"Camilo," I wiggled out of his grasp, taking the book in my possession as I turned to face him. "Who is the mail girl?" I mumbled quietly with a hint of jealousy in my tone as he stared at me. I avoided eye contact because I felt like maybe I wasn't good enough. Our relationship literally started yesterday. Camilo released a nervous laugh,
