The look on Camilo's face screamed regret just as he sat down beside me in the conference room. We gathered together to discuss the upcoming fundraiser for the Un Corazón Orphanage. A large wooden table stretched from one side of the room to the other, holding up to 10 people. Tucking my hair behind my ear, I watched as the Madrigal boy wiped his palms on his jeans as his eyes scanned the room. A smile tugged at my lips and I leaned over to him,
"Pst, you okay? You don't look too well." I pointed out sarcastically just as he jumped at my whispering. Camilo threw me a nervous lip bite and shrugged,
"I mean, the anxiety of living a week without interacting with you is dawning on me... heavily." He gulped and I laughed, nudging him playfully.
"Hey, if you hadn't lost the bet during the sleepover, this wouldn't have happened." I smirked and he glared at me sideways.
"Yeah? But I'll find a way to go around this, eventually." He said determinedly, however, his facial expression said otherwise. All of a sudden we hear Papa clear his throat to get the attention of the staff members in the room. He started off with a cheesy pun to which Camilo enjoyed a little too much. At this he relaxed a tad bit.
"Now, as you all are aware, we will be holding a fundraiser after two years!" He announced and the audience applauded along with small cheers scattering around. Papa goes on to explain the history of this orphanage before finally he comes upon listing the fundraiser options to vote on.
"Mrs. Perez and I came up with a couple of ideas." He flips through some papers, "Here we have an Ice Cream Party, Marathon race, and Baking Contests." Papa listed and looked up at the rectangular table in front of him where he met everyone's gaze. Silence sat for a long while until someone from across the table raised their hands,
"Well, due to the summer rays, I think we should go with an Ice Cream Party!" A staff broke the silence which caused a minor commotion. Another person cleared their throat,
"Well, ice creams tend to attract children, we need to have the whole village involved-- perhaps, a Baking Contest instead?"
This went on for quite a while. I glanced over at Camilo who seemed to be in deep thought in the middle of these disagreements. I furrowed my brows at him and he finally realized my existence, turning his attention to me and throwing me a side smile.
I knew he wanted to say something but he just didn't know when to interrupt. I straightened my back and faked a loud cough. I felt everyone's eyes on me just as the room died down. In the corner of my eyes, I see Camilo smiling at me-- silently thank me.
"Did you have something to say, Y/n?" Papa had asked with a brow raised high to his forehead and I opened my mouth to respond when suddenly Camilo rose his hand to speak.
"I-I did, sir. Um..." He fixed his posture and cleared his throat, "I was thinking, why not do a performance show instead?" Camilo asked and he let it sink into the room until Mrs. Perez tilted her head with interest,
"Can you evaluate?"
"We'll perform a show that'll last a week-- an exciting story in which the town will be eager to know what happened at the end." Camilo began and this time he spoke with such confidence. He continued, "Not only will we sell tickets, but there will be food stands, snacks, and drinks meaning they will have to purchase these items-- so we'll probably meet our goal within four days if all goes well!" Camilo exclaimed and this easily grabbed everyone's attention.
Wow, he really thought this through.
"And since it's a play for the orphanage, I was thinking that maybe we can put the older children into good use." Camilo smirked. By this, he meant that he'll have the kids perform with him on stage and maybe even work backstage.
Everyone was sold. Only because this allowed the staff members to monitor less kids for a week straight. And just like that, everything was settled on Camilo's Performance Show. Next, everyone was assigned a role.
Mrs. Perez: Decorating Team
Camilo: Director/Theater Team
Me: Cook and--"Wait!" Camilo blurted before my role was set in stone. "I know Y/n's amazing at cooking, but I actually have an important task for her." He says desperately to Papa who slowly nodded with consideration, "My Tìa Julieta wouldn't mind cooking, I'll ask but I'm 100 percent sure she'll agree." He reassured with such a panicked voice and then Papa smiled and changed my position to: Theater Team
Skeptical, I eyed Camilo but he obviously avoided my gaze. Papa continued to verify the schedule:
PERFORMANCE SHOW:
MAY 22nd - 28th
EVERYDAY @ 7PM - 9 PM"We have a little over two weeks to prepare and advertise the play to the village." Papa announced and everyone cheered with satisfaction. A few more words were exchanged and next thing we knew, it was almost dinner time. Everyone dispersed from the conference room and I caught up with Camilo, tugging at his arm.
"Hey, I never agreed to be a part of the performance." I threw him a small pout and Camilo glanced at me sideways, stuffing his hands in his pockets. We made our way out of the corridors and passed the dining room where all the children were gathered.
"Hm," He tapped his index finger to his chin, "I don't recall you disagreeing either." He smirked and tilted his head in a provoking manner. I glared at him but then realized we were both standing at the front door. I looked at the wooden door and frowned a little,
"You leaving?" I asked with a hint of sadness at my tongue. "What about dinner?" I invited, pointing to the dining room where the children's chattering leaked out from. Camilo bit the inside of his cheek from smiling too big at my reaction as he observed my distressed expression. I really don't want him to leave.
Camilo fakes a long, dramatic sigh and he takes a hand out from his pocket and pats the top of my head, startling me. My eyes widened at his odd action. I felt his fingers rustling my hair as he leans to level his eyes with mine.
"I'll come back tomorrow, I promise." He smiles like he would with Antonio, gentle and loving. "I actually had some errands to run tonight-- you know, closing up the animals with Luisa." He winks and pulls me to place my forehead on his. The warmth of his skin radiated against me. I froze, unsure of what he was doing, perhaps thinking. We stood forehead to forehead in silence when he scoffed lightly.
"Get some rest, you look exhausted, Y/n." He points out in a low voice with his eyes shut. If anything, he looked exhausted. I nodded and with that he pulled away and waved me goodbye. He opened the door and stepped out into the village street.
"I'll be back tomorrow with a plan for the fundraiser!" He calls with the biggest smile on his lips as he steps further and further away from me. I nodded and waved,
"Mm, see you tomorrow then! Goodnight!"
