I watched as Percy, Annabeth, and Grover waved goodbye to the other campers before hiking up to Half-Blood Hill where Thalia's Pine Tree was.
When they reached the top, I held out my hands and black mist surrounded me. This mist was able to create some sort of veil of darkness that hid me from most eyes, even Chiron's. I used to use it to steal candy from the camp store when I was younger.
Hopefully, Argus wouldn't be able to see through it. I slowly crept up the hill and saw Chiron introduce Argus to Percy.
"This is Argus," Chiron told him. "He will drive you into the city, and, er, well, keep an eye on things."
I heard footsteps coming up the hill. I turned and saw Luke carrying a pair of basketball shoes.
"Hey!" he panted. "Glad I caught you."
Annabeth blushed as per usual wheneve she saw him.
"Just wanted to say good luck," Luke told Percy. "And I thought...um, maybe you could use these."
He handed Percy the sneakers.
Luke said, "Maia!"
White bird's wings sprouted out the heels, startling Percy so much, he dropped them. The shoes flapped around on the ground until the wings folded up and disappeared.
"Awesome!" Grover said.
Luke smiled. "Those served me well when I was on my quest. Gift from Dad. Of course, I don't use them much these days..." His expression turned sad.
"Hey, man," Percy said. "Thanks."
"Listen, Percy..." Luke looked uncomfortable. "A lot of hopes are riding on you. So just...kill some monsters for me, okay?"
They shook hands. Luke patted Grover's head and gave Annabeth a goodbye hug. She looked like she might pass out.
As he was leaving, he looked around, probably to see if he could spot me, but gave up when he couldn't. That was a good sign.
I watched as Annabeth walked down the hill with Argus, Percy gave Grover the flying shoes, and Chiron gave Percy a pen that turned into a sword.
When Percy started down the hill, that's when I followed as quietly as possible. Chiron held his bow high in salute.
It didn't look like he could see me. Good.
When I reached the bottom, everyone except Percy was in the white SUV. He was looking around for me.
"What are you doing?" I heard Annabeth say.
"Hang on," replied Percy.
I looked back at Chiron, who was making his way down Half-Blood Hill. He wasn't looking this way. Perfect.
I moved right next to Percy and dispelled the mist, causing him to jump.
"Dude!" he whispered-yelled at me.
"Sorry." I stifled a laugh, before getting into the car.
I was greeted by the shocked faces of Grover and Annabeth. Argus didn't even seem to notice I was there.
"What are you doing here?" Annabeth looked strangely happy that I was here.
"I'm joining the quest," I said.
