Percy's POV

As (Y/N) and I walked back through the city of the gods, conversations stopped. The Muses paused their concert. People and satyrs and naiads all turned towards us, their faces filled with respect and gratitude, and as we passed, they knelt, as if we were some kind of hero.

...

Fifteen minutes later, we were back on the streets of Manhattan.

(Y/N) hadn't said anything after his conversation with Poseidon. He seemed to be deep in thought.

(Y/N) could control some sort of dark mist, and his birthday was on the anniversary of one of the darkest days in human history. Just who was (Y/N)'s parent?

I didn't want to bring it up. I turned to him.

"Hey, do you mind if we go see, uh, my mom?" I asked.

My words looked like they broke him out of whatever thought he was in.

"Oh. Sorry, Perce. Yeah, of course. I'm excited to meet her." He gave me a small smile.

We caught a taxi and told the driver to take us to my mom's apartment.

On the way, (Y/N) rubbed his head.

"Do you want to talk about it?" I asked.

He sighed. "What's there to talk about? I'm still no closer to figuring it out."

"Well, we know that your misty powers are so OP that the gods can't see through them."

"I guess." He leaned back in the seat. "Maybe I should stop trying. It's obviously going nowhere."

I put a hand on his shoulder. "Hey, don't say that. We'll figure this out, okay?"

He nodded and closed his eyes. "I'm so tired."

"Ditto. I just want to lay down in a bed and sleep for a week."

When the taxi dropped us off, I led (Y/N) over to my mom's apartment room and rang the doorbell.

When the door opened, my beautiful mother, smelling of peppermint and licorice, was standing there, the weariness and worry evaporating from her face as soon as she saw me.

"Percy! Oh, thank goodness! Oh, my baby!"

She crushed the air right out of me. We stood in the hallway as she cried and ran her hands through my hair.

I'll admit it—my eyes were a little misty, too. I was shaking; I was so relieved to see her.

I glanced over at (Y/N), who was smiling at us, though I could see a sort of sadness in his eyes, one of longing.

My mom told me she's just appeared at the apartment that morning, scaring Gabe half out of his wits. She didn't remember anything since the Minotaur, and couldn't believe it when Gabe told her I was a wanted criminal, traveling across the country, blowing up national monuments. She'd been going out of her mind with worry all day because she hadn't heard the news. Gabe had forced her to go into work, saying she had a month's salary to make up and she'd better get started.

I swallowed back my anger and decided to tell her my own story. But first I introduced (Y/N).

"Mom, this is my friend, (Y/N)."

He waved at her. "Hi, ma'am."

She smiled at him. "Thank you for helping keep my baby safe."

I couldn't hide my embarrassment. "Mom!"
