(Y/N)'s POV

I woke up on a pier. Percy, Annabeth, and Grover were looking down at me, relief on their faces.

"Good morning, sleepyhead," Annabeth told me.

I groaned and sat up. "Where are we?"

"The Santa Monica Pier," Percy answered. "We ended up in the middle of the bay, and a Coast Guard boat picked us up and dropped us off here."

"I guess I must've passed out or something," I mumbled.

The sun was starting to rise.

"The Coast Guard left an unconscious kid on the pier?" I asked, smirking.

"We told them we would take care of you," Grover answered.

I looked over at Los Angeles and saw that it was on fire, with plumes of smoke rising from neighborhoods all over the city. Hades's work.

Hades... The Underworld... That's right. Rage suddenly filled me.

Percy's POV

I sighed and leaned back. I tried not to think about my mother.

"I don't believe it," Annabeth said. "We went all that way."

"It was a trick," I said. "A strategy worthy of Athena."

"Hey," she warned.

"You get it, don't you?"

She dropped her eyes, her anger fading. "Yeah. I get it."

"Well, I don't!" Grover complained. "Would somebody—"

"Percy..." Annabeth said. "I'm sorry about your mother. I'm so sorry..."

(Y/N) suddenly glared at me. He looked furious.

"You bastard!"

He grabbed my shirt and stared right into my eyes. It took me a second to realize he was tearing up.

"Why did you save me?! You should've taken your mother!"

Annabeth and Grover both grabbed his arms to pull him back, but he resisted.

I stared back at him, trying not to sob like a baby. "I did what I thought she would've wanted me to do." My voice cracked.

He was unconvinced. "You should've left me! Your mom would be here now! I deserved it! The only reason this happened was because I came!"

He let go of my shirt and collapsed onto the pier ground, crying. "I-I'm sorry, Perce. I'm so sorry..."

I wiped my eyes. It was too late. I was crying as well.

"It's all my fault. Because of me, your mom is still with Hades... If I hadn't come, there would've been enough pearls for all of you..."

He looked up at me.

"I deserved to have been left! Your mom didn't! Why did you do this?! Why would you save someone like me? I endangered this whole quest! My presence nearly got us killed multiple times!"

I glared at him through my tears. "If I had left you, I'd be feeling the exact same sense of loss! And my mom would've never forgiven me if I had left you down there."

He looked back down at the ground.

"I wouldn't have gone on this quest without you! I wouldn't have it any other way. I'll find another way to free my mom! But both she and I wouldn't have done anything that would've put my friends in danger! He would've killed you, (Y/N). Or at the very least, torture and take control over you! I couldn't live with myself if that happened to you!"
