Samantha was sad. She wasn't exactly sure what had happened, but she knew her daddy wasn't coming back. Her mommy had cried a lot the last few days. Today, they had gone to Daddy's funeral, whatever that was, and lots of people were there. Mommy said that they had worked with Daddy. Mommy had made her wear a black dress and sit still while the preacher talked for forever. When the men carrying the box Daddy was in had put it into the ground, she had yelled at them to let him out. They hadn't listened to her, and Mommy had only started crying harder.
Now they were sitting on a bench at the park, watching the ducks in the pond. Mommy had bought her an ice cream cone to eat before they went home.
"Mrs. Stellan." A man's voice said. Samantha turned and saw some people that had been at Daddy's funeral. Samantha remembered them because they were all wearing sunglasses, and two of them had had sticks next to them that Mommy said were called crutches.
"Yes, that's me," Mommy said. "But please, call me Beth."
"Okay Beth," The man said. "May I sit?"
"Of course." Mommy said, scooting to the side. "Sammy, sweetie, scoot over to the side so these people can sit down."
Samantha scooted over, seeing that the man's face had turned almost white. She sat on the very edge of the bench, and two of the people sat down on the other side of Mommy, the man who was talking and a lady with him. The others stayed standing and moved so that they were standing around the bench. A man stood right next to Samantha, and when she looked up at him, he smiled and waved at her.
"So how do you know my husband?" Mommy asked. "I've never seen you with the company."
"We worked together." The man said, reaching for his glasses. He pulled them off, and Mommy gasped. His eyes were scary, like they had fire in them. Samantha didn't like them, so she closed her eyes tight. "But no, I'm not a company man."
"You're Fang, then." Mommy said quietly. "These must be the rest of The Eyes then."
"I am, and we are." Fang said. "I am so, so sorry for your loss."
"You were there then?" Mommy asked. "Can you tell me what happened?"
"Hey there, kiddo." A voice in front of Samantha asked. Fang was still talking but she couldn't really hear him anymore. She opened her eyes and saw that the man from before was knelt down beside her. "What's your name?"
"Samantha." She said shyly.
"Well Samantha, my name is Sentinel." The man smiled at her. "It's very nice to meet you."
"Do you wear glasses so people don't see your eyes?" She asked. Mommy gasped, but Sentinel laughed.
"Not usually, but I did today for your daddy's funeral." He pushed his glasses up his nose.
"Are your eyes as scary as his?" She asked, pointing towards Fang.
"Samantha!" Mommy scolded. "We do not point! It's rude!"'
"It's alright, don't worry about it." Fang said. "She's right, after all. My eyes are scary. But no, sweetie, his eyes aren't as scary as mine."
"Would you like to see them?" Sentinel asked, reaching up and grabbing his sunglasses with two fingers. Samantha nodded. "Okay then."
He pulled his sunglasses off, and Samantha gasped. His eyes had a whole bunch of eyes in them.
"So pretty!"
Sentinel's face turned pink, and everyone started laughing. Samantha laughed with them, even though she wasn't sure what they were laughing at. Then Fang cleared his throat, and everyone got quiet again and turned to him. Samantha didn't want to look at his scary eyes, so she kept looking at Sentinel's instead.
