Sentinel

Home Base

Laine, Oklahoma, USA

December 2nd, 2019

Their "new digs" were a ten minute drive from the airfield they had landed at. It was  in the middle of a development full of twisting and turning roads. The area reminded Sentinel of where he had grown up, with walking trails and parks scattered about. It seemed like a great place to live.

"Ah, suburbia," Fang sighed from the driver's seat as they followed Stellan's car around another corner. Sentinel glanced in the side mirror and saw Ranger's truck still behind them. "One thing I don't miss about living in the city."

"What's wrong with the suburbs?" Oracle asked from the back seat. "I get that it doesn't have the freedom we get out in the country where we can do whatever we want, but it's still nice."

"Yeah, HoA's and screaming kids and constant yardwork and DIYers working on shit early in the morning every day. What's not to love?" Fang asked sarcastically.

"Fang, I don't know that I've ever seen you sleep more than an hour two in all the years we've known each other." Oracle countered.

"Maybe not anymore, but I used to sleep in whenever I could." Fang shrugged. "We should be just about there."

Fang's assumption proved to be dead right, as Stellan slowed to a stop in front of a house in the middle of a two-way street. From the outside, it just looked like a slightly upscaled version of the surrounding houses: two stories, white brick walls, fenced in back yard, tree in the front yard, circle driveway, and two car garage attached to the house. Fang pulled into the driveway, stopping just in front of the door, and Ranger pulled in behind them. Sentinel climbed out of the truck, and the smell of suburbia hit him: the sickly sweet scent of rotting leaves, the charry smell of heaters working overtime, and the woody smell of a fireplace burning in one of the surrounding houses.

"What do you think?" Stellan asked as he walked up the driveway to the trucks.

"The Wi-Fi better be good," Oracle was trying to sound like a bored teen, but the warmth in her voice and the shine her pixelated eyes gave her away.

"Wi-Fi?" Stellan asked. "No, we've got dialup here."

"Ughhhhhhh." Oracle groaned, but it dissolved into giggles at the end. Ranger and Vyper walked up, both of them with duffle bags on their shoulders and trunks in their arms.

"Any chance we can get in to drop our stuff off?" Ranger asked, gesturing at the door with his rifle.

"No, you have to stay out here and sleep in the truck," Fang said, and Sentinel didn't have to look at him to know he was smirking. Ranger gave him the finger while Stellan turned towards the door. "Sentinel, go grab Chesyr. She's got first dibs on rooms."

Sentinel turned around to find Chesyr standing in the street, looking around at the surrounding houses. She had a smile on her face as she turned in slow circles, but she stopped as Sentinel joined her.

"You good?" he asked.

"Yeah, yeah I'm good," Chesyr gestured to their surroundings. "I just always wanted to live in a place like this, you know?"

"I kind of do." Sentinel shrugged, then cocked his head back towards where Stellan and the others were waiting at the front door. "Fang said you get first dibs on rooms, so you should probably get over there before he changes his mind."

"Oh! I forgot about that." Chesyr grabbed Sentinel's hand. "You want to room with me?"

"Um, I..." Sentinel froze. "Wouldn't you rather room with Oracle?"
