Orion

Grandma's House

Unknown

Orion was playing with his toys when the doorbell rang. Grandma had left the house a few hours ago, but she had taken the remote with her to make sure he didn't turn on the TV. He hadn't been allowed to watch TV since his brother disappeared, since Grandma didn't want him to see it. Instead, he was playing with LEGOs. The set that Grandma had bought him was supposed to be a house, but he thought that it would look way cooler as a monster truck. Once he figured out how to build a monster truck, at least.

The doorbell rang again. Orion wasn't supposed to answer the door when he was home alone, but what if it was his brother? The grown-ups had been looking for him everywhere, calling his name and even putting up signs. Maybe he had found his way home but couldn't get in because he was too little to reach the handle?

The person at the door wasn't his baby brother. Instead, there was a man there. He was tall, and had his hat pulled down so that Orion couldn't see his eyes. He was also holding a big box in his gloved hands. The bottom of the box had tape all over it, but the top of it was open.

"Are you Orion?" The man asked. His voice was pleasant, and he smiled as he spoke. Orion thought immediately that the man must be a nice person.

Orion just nodded, smiling back at the man.

"It's good to see you again." The man said. Orion didn't think that he had seen the man before, but there had been lots of grownups talking to him the last couple of days. "I have a gift for you."

The man held out the box, and Orion took it. It was heavy, but only in the middle. Whatever was in it was heavy, but it must have been small. It also smelled funny.

"Thank you," Orion said. Grandma had always told him that he should say that when somebody gave him a present.

"Make sure you go open it right away, okay?" The man said. When Orion nodded again, the man shut the door.

Orion ran to the kitchen table to open his present. He set it down and got into a chair so he could see into the top of the box. He pulled the flaps on the top back and looked inside.

Inside was his brother's head, just his head. His mouth was open in a silent scream, the pain he must have been in when he died. His eyes were missing, and blood had poured from the empty sockets like crimson tears, The bottom of the box was filled with blood, almost a half inch of sticky red surrounding the stump of his brother's neck.

"Big brother, where are you?" The head asked in his brother's voice. Before he could even respond, it continued. "Why weren't you watching me? You could have seen where I went, who grabbed me. You're the reason they could never find me! It's all your fault!"

Orion tried to talk back, to say that it wasn't his fault. But the head didn't listen. It screamed, loud and full of agony, the pain that he must have felt before he died.  Orion tried to cover his ears, but the screaming only seemed to get louder. It was coming from everywhere all at once. The screaming was inside his head, telling him that it was his fault, everything was his fault. His eyes started to burn like they were on fire.

Orion screamed.

Sentinel shot up with a shout, coated in sweat and his heart pounding. He could still hear the screaming, and he had to check to make sure it wasn't still coming from him. He quickly looked around his room, seeing the obvious, that nothing had changed. There was a light knock at his door right before it opened.
