"Please." Sirius Black said, his voice breaking. "Please, I can't go home. Just give me one chance, I swear I'll make it up. I didn't mean to hurt Snape!"
"I'm sorry Sirius." McGonagll said, looking pityingly at Sirius. "But you put Severus's life and Remus's identity in danger, with a prank. I'm sorry, but you are hereby expelled from Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry."
Tears of fear filled Sirius's eyes.
"If I go back, she'll kill me." he said in a tiny voice, to the infamous Sirius Black.
"I'm sorry. Rules are rules. You may pack your bags, the train will be here in one hour." McGonagll said, not believing Sirius's words.
Sirius turned, desperately trying to staunch the tears in his eyes. He knew he deserved to be punished. He could've ruined Remus's life. But expelled? Back home with his mother? The worst punishment he'd ever considered. And the thought terrified him. He carefully walked back to the Gryffindor common room and found it deserted. But the second he stepped into his room, he knew the truth. He deserved this. He didn't deserve a second chance. But he needed one.

Peter and James were talking in hushed voices. James turned and saw Sirius standing there. Something in his eyes hardened that felt like a kick to the stomach for Sirius.
"James, is-is Moony alright?" Sirius asked, hesitantly.
"Remus," James said sharply, "Is recovering."
Sirius swallowed the lump in his throat.
"Alright, mate."
Sirius couldn't hold James's gaze any longer and he dropped his head and stared at the ground, his stomach rolling.
"Look, James, I'm really sorry."
"I'm not the one who needs an apology." James responded bluntly.
"I know. But I won't be here to give him one."
Emotion finally changed on James's face.
"Why not?" he asked, a hint of nerves in his voice. "Black, what's going on?"
"I've been expelled." Sirius muttered, anger boiling in his blood.
James' face was unreadable. On one hand, he was furious at Sirius for betraying Remus. On the other, he was terrified for Sirius to go back to his family. James's mad side won.
"Sirius, you don't deserve that. But I can't deny how angry I am at you. Betraying Remus? How could you?"
"I'm sorry!" Sirius yelled.
"Tell Remus that!" James snapped back.
"Tell Remus what?" Remus asked, coming up from behind the fighting boys.
Sirius went white with fear and shock.
"Remus, look-" he started, but Remus held up a hand to stop him.
"Save it. I want to talk in private. Me and you. Common room."
"Anything."
"Well?" Remus asked, glaring at his former boyfriend. "What did you want to say to me?"
"Moony, I-I'm sorry! I didn't realize that would happen!" Sirius begged for forgiveness.
Remus looked down at Sirius with disgust, tears clouding his vision, his scars seeming to glow redder in the dark, firelight of the Common Room.
"You didn't realize. But it still happened. It still happened! I don't care how much you hate him, but you risked his life. My identity. For a prank?" Remus said, shaking, his voice growing louder with each word.
His tears were falling now, but he made no move to brush them away.
"I trusted you, Sirius." he said, his voice breaking. "I trusted you with everything. And you took that trust, and broke it. Smashed it. Destroyed it. I will never forgive you for that. Never."
"Moony, I-"
"Don't you dare call me that. You don't deserve that Sirius Black. I thought you were supposed to be better than your family. But I was wrong. You're just as horrible as all of them."
Remus glared at Sirius as he stared, crestfallen as Remus words caught them where it hurt. For anyone else, Sirius would've yelled back. He would've cursed, and fought, and screamed until they would listen. But with Remus, all he could do was fall to his knees, and beg.
"Please, Remus. Please just-just give me one more chance. I'm so, so sorry."
Sirius began to cry, as his only love pushed him away.
"You're done. You're out of your chances. We're done."
Remus turned and left the Gryffindor Common Room as Sirius stared at his back, tears dripping down his face.
"Re." he whispered. "Re, I'm so, so sorry. I'm so, so sorry. I'll make it up to you. One day. I promise."
"Sirius Black." Walburga said, staring at her eldest son. "Expelled from Hogwarts?"
Sirius stared at the ground, not sure if she was proud or mad. All he knew was he was scared.
"I suppose we will have to put you back with your tutors." she sniffed. "At least you're away from those disgusting blood-traitors and mudbloods."
Anger stirred in Sirius's chest, but he didn't say a word. He knew not to tempt his mother. She raised her eyebrows at his silence.
"Well, it looks like things will be different around here from now on." Walburga purred. "Starting with the fact that we are hosting a dinner tonight. Your arrival is certainly inconvenient, but I'm sure there will be space for you."
"What, to become evil?" Sirius blurted out, the words moving faster than he could stop himself.
Walburga gave him a deadly glare.
"Tonight," she said. "Tonight, you'll learn your place. Among us, the purest 28, you will learn. You will become one of us."
"I'll never do that." Sirius spat, but his stomach was rolling with fear.
"Oh, Sirius. Do you never learn? I am your mother, and you'll act like it. Do you understand?"
She lifted Sirius's head with her hand and he was forced to look into her eyes.
"I understand." Sirius said, knowing it was the only thing he could do.
His mind was racing in fear, in desperation, but he kept his expression level.
"I understand, Mother."
"To the Dark Lord!" a toast went up.
Sirius grimaced in disgust, and kept his glass down. He was mad again. Blood boiling, destructively mad. He grit his teeth and stared at the table cloth.
"Sirius!" Walburga snapped through her teeth, keeping a smile on her face. "Stop picking at your food and eat! Everybody is watching you."
"I'm not hungry." Sirius muttered back.
His stomach was in butterflies and he felt on edge. He couldn't eat, not with the guilt from Remus and the fear of his mother rolling in his stomach.
"I don't care. You're a Black, act like it."
Angrily, Sirius stabbed a slice of meat with his fork and gnawed on it. It recoiled in his stomach but he forced it down, trying not to gag. He grabbed his glass of water and drank it down.
"Now, Sirius." someone said from the end of the table. "You will be taking the Mark tonight, won't you?"
Sirius spat out his drink, gagging for air, coughing.
"What?!?"
"Sirius Orion Black!" Walburga snapped.
Sirius ignored her.
"I'm doing what?"
"Don't you know?" Bellatrix said, a mad smile on her face. "You're taking the Mark."
She whipped up her robe sleeve and showed him her forearm. A dark black snake-like creature was inked on her skin.
"There's no way in Godric's name I'll ever be doing that!" Sirius yelled, before clamping his hands over his mouth as the reality of his words set in.
Quickly, he turned towards his mother who was ready to explode in rage. The look on her face sealed Sirius's face. He knew what was coming.
"SIRIUS BLACK!" Walburga shrieked. "HOW DARE YOU!"
The table exploded in shouts and screams, but Sirius could barely hear it as panic overwhelmed him. Walburga grabbed his arm and yanked him roughly from his chair, her nails digging into his arms. Sirius let out a hiss of pain.
"Let go!" he snapped, then immediately wished he hadn't said anything.
Walburga began dragging him to her study, up the stairs. Sirius knew what was coming. He knew she would torture him. And the thought terrified him. The scars on his calves were soon to be reopened, covered with fresh cuts. She threw open the door and slammed it shut behind her, the second Orion entered not far behind.
"Sirius Orion Black, how dare you?" Walburga screamed. "After all we've done with you, you couldn't do anything right? What is wrong with you!"
Sirius clenched his jaw and bit fierce words back.
"You will be taking the Mark, and you will do it graciously!"
"No I won't!" Sirius screamed back. "I'll never join him! Never!"
Walburga's eyes flashed with anger. She grabbed Sirius by the arm and threw him over her desk, pulling his robes up past his knees. Sirius fought to escape her but Orion grabbed his arm and pinned it behind his back.
"Stop it!" Walburga snapped. "Don't move or else."
The fear was too much. Sirius forced himself to still but he was angry. Angry and mad, but mostly scared. His breathing quickened and his heartbeat sped up as Walburg pulled her wand out of her robes.
"Lacero! Lacero! Lacero!"
Three long cuts split across Sirius's calves. He screamed in pain and shock at the speed she had sent her spells, and collapsed on the desk, blood slowly dripping down his skin. It felt like flames had shot up his legs but he couldn't stop it from spreading. Orion pulled away from Sirius and he gasped for breath on the desk.
"Please," Sirius begged, shaking in fear. "Please, stop."
"Swear your allegiance to the Dark Lord, Sirius Orion Black!" Walburga screamed with a manic laugh.
Sirius cringed, knowing what was coming. "Do it for Moony." he thought. 'This is punishment for what you did to him.'
"No." Sirius forced out of his terrified voice. "Never."
"Crucio!"
Blinding pain overtook Sirius. Everything hurt, in deadly pain. He screamed a broken scream, unable to bear the pain. He wanted to beg, to plead for it to stop. But he refused to give in. To be weak.
"Toujours Pur! Swear it, Sirius!"
"No!"
"Crucio!"
Sirius collapsed, trembling and unable to move. Pain like hit knives stabbed every part of his body.
"Swear it!" Walburga didn't wait for a response. "Crucio!"
An agonizing scream tore out of Sirius throat as he tried to fight off the pain.
"Crucio! Crucio!"
Sirius ran out of strength, giving up. He lay on the floor, silent tears of distress and desperation leaking down his face. Sweat poured down his back in pure, unbearable pain.
"Crucio! Crucio! Crucio! Swear it, Sirius Orion Black! Swear it!"
Sirius couldn't take another second of the pain. And yet he had to.
"Crucio!"
"Stop, please!" he sobbed at his mother.
"Swear it, Sirius." Walburga said softly. "Swear it and I'll stop."
"Please." Sirius cried, his voice ragged and painful. "Please, Mum. Dad."
"Crucio." the command was soft, the consequences unbearable.
"Swear it! Crucio!"
"Stop!" Sirius broke, begging, unable to take another dosage of the pain.
"So you'll swear it?" Walburga said, an evil smile spreading on her face.
With a sudden spur of strength, Sirius stood his ground, refusing to let the treacherous words that would cure his pain, escape.
He would be strong, strong for Remus. Walburga sighed in exasperation.
"Crucio."
And everything spilled out. Sirius screamed into the air, finally destroyed. He was done. He was destroyed, broken until next time.
"I swear it! I'll join the Dark Lord. Please, just stop. Please, Mum." he cried, sobbing.
"Good boy." Walburga said in a sugary voice. "But just so you remember..."
"No!" Sirius whimpered in dread, but he was too late.
"Crucio!"
