Walburga handed a silver snake cup portkey to Sirius and gave him a cold glare, threatening him to cross her.
"Do not stray from your mission. This is the first time I am letting you go on a mission by yourself. If you fail or try to stop the Dark Lord, there will be repercussions. Do you understand me?"
"Yes, mother." Sirius responded, his voice emotionless.
"Yes, mother." Regulus said, only moments after his brother, his voice blank.
"Good. Now go, your father and I don't want to wait too long."
With that, the portkey began to glow blue and Regulus grabbed on to it only seconds before they suddenly vanished. The two boys were thrown onto icy cold rock and almost immediately sprayed with freezing water. Sirius shivered and straightened up, holding his wand tightly.
"Sirius, would you please talk to me?" his brother asked, desperately, now that they were finally away from prying eyes. "I'm sorry. I would take it all back if I could. But I was scared and Mum was right there and she was making me and-"
Sirius spun on his brother, no longer able to control his temper now that he was away from his parents. He had no reason to have to fight his anger, not anymore. Not out here.
"No, no, Regulus, just stop. You are the reason all the bad things have been happening. It's not our parents, it's not me or anything that has happened to you in your life or when we were just kids. It's you, alright? It's you."
Regulus instinctively raised his wand but instead of fighting back, Sirius stepped away, terror filling his eyes and panic sparking in his chest. His hands were trembling and tears filled his eyes. Guilt washed over Regulus and he looked down, taking a deep breath as he tried to control his temper.
"You're right." he whispered, his voice trembling with emotion. "I'm sorry."
Sirius didn't respond, heading forward in the cold, winter air. They approached a large white stone, completely pure in the dark atmosphere. Neither boy spoke as they looked at the rock in confusion.
"Payment in blood." Sirius said, quietly, understanding it after a moment, knowing how hard this mission was going to be."Blood?" Regulus asked and Sirius nodded, coldly.
For a moment, neither moved, watching the other. Sirius knew it was cruel and petty, but he wanted to see if Regulus was willing to do anything for him.
On the other hand, for months guilt had been festering in Regulus's stomach and he knew this was a chance to make it up to Sirius. It wasn't full but it could help. He pulled his sleeve back and Sirius stopped him immediately, feeling slightly guilty that he'd tested his brother like that. No matter what, Regulus was always his baby brother.
"I don't care how mad I am at you. You're not doing this."
"Sirius, we have to. Don't be an idiot." Regulus snapped back, agitated and defensive. "I'll be fine."
"You don't have to. It's not like I'm not used to it. I'll do it." Sirius responded.
The words made an uncomfortable silence fill the air. They had never discussed the fact of Sirius cutting. Regulus knew about it but they had never talked about it. Sirius pushed back his own sleeve and Regulus's eyes widened in surprise at the dark ink on his arm, covered with red and white lines, deeper and worse than he thought it had gotten. Sirius barely blinked an eye as he dug his nail into a fresh cut. Grimacing slightly, he moved his arm and let the blood drip onto the rock. As soon as the dark red met the pure white, the door opened and the brothers walked in. Sirius immediately noticed a cold chill that filled the room along with the scent of seawater and ice. He shivered and noticed his brother doing the same.
