Chapter 5: Tragic Adversity

Akko's PoV
Well, today's the day where I'll have my first ever broom riding class with Diana. I hope I can do it. I don't wanna let her down, I thought to myself. I sighed and kept searching for the place Diana had mentioned before. "Meet me near the tree behind the academy. It'll be a private session, just you and me". I still can't get that out of my head. After a while, I saw her sitting underneath a big tree. Seems like she was waiting for me for quite a while. I continued to walk towards her.

Akko: Diana, sorry I'm late...

Diana: Oh, no worries, Akko. You weren't late. In fact, you're just on time. Giggles

Akko: Ahaha, thanks for waiting for me. So, what are we doing today?

Diana: Well, I figured today we'll start on the proper way of mounting our brooms without sliding off the end, like a certain someone that I know of...

Diana said with a smirk on her face

Akko: I-i know that. You don't have to keep reminding that, ya know...

Diana: Ahaha, I know. I just like teasing you every now and then. I'll also teach you the correct way of gripping it. Now then, let's get started, shall we?

Akko and Diana spent quite some time learning of the basics of broom riding. Not that Akko is a total beginner, but Diana felt that it would be much simpler to teach the fundamentals from the start.

Diana: No, no, Akko. Here, let me show you.

Diana went behind Akko's back and corrected her posture and hand placements.
This made Akko blush quite a bit and the fact that it was Diana who's doing it made her blush even more.

Akko: D-Diana, y-you're too close...

Diana quickly realized the situation and backed off. Again, now both of them are blushing

Diana: I-i'm sorry. I hope I didn't make you uncomfortable

Akko: N-no, of course not. It's not like I don't like it or anything. I-i mean, well....

Both Diana and Akko's redness can practically be seen steaming off their face.

Diana: W-well, if you're alright with it, then let's proceed.

Akko: A-alright.

It was quite a bit awkward at the beginning after that incident, but the awkwardness faded away after some time. Diana and Akko laughed it off and continued with the lessons. Later, Akko has done what Diana has taught perfectly.

Diana: Alright, you did a great job, Akko. Well done!

Akko: Well, it's only cause I have a great tutor.

Akko smiled proudly while Diana smiled contentedly.

Akko: So, what's the next step?

Diana: Now, we'll focus on your elevation. Try to ride on your broom at a certain height before I tell you to increase that height. Here, let's do it here.

Akko: Alright!

Akko then did what Diana had instructed her to do. It was quite easy but it progressively became harder when she tried to fly higher. Suddenly, Akko lost her balance then went falling down towards Diana.

Diana: Akko!

Diana tried to catch her but failed and both of them crashed to the ground.

Akko: O-o-ow. Diana, are you okay? Ugh, sorry about tha....

Akko was speechless. She fell right on top of Diana who was looking right at her. Akko's heart raced, sending warm blood to her face, fearing that she looked like an unsophisticated fool, especially when her crush also blushed subtly her way. Both of them quickly got off of each other.

Akko: A-are you okay, Diana? Are you hurt anywhere?

Diana: Y-yeah, I'm fine. How bout you, Akko?

Akko: Yeah, I'm all good. T-thanks...for, um...catching me back there.

Diana: N-no problem. I just didn't want you to get hurt is all.

Akko: Yeah, I can see that.

Both of them wanted to say more but neither of them had any idea what to say. An awkward silence ensues. Then, Diana broke the silence.

Diana: Well, it would seem that you're getting better at this. A few more practice and you'll be flying around Luna Nova faster than me.

Akko: Coming from you, that's really high praise. Thaks, Diana!

Both of them smiled at each other, simultaneously thinking the same thing; how both of them wished that moments like these would never end.

Akko: Hey, it's getting late. We should head back now.

Diana: Oh, you're right. Let's get going then.

Akko: Erm, you can go ahead. I wanna practice for a bit.

Diana: Are you sure? Like you said, it is getting quite late.

Akko: Don't worry, I'll be back. I'm just gonna practice for a while. You go head back.

Diana: Alright, Akko. But make sure to be back before curfew. Take care, Akko.

Akko: Will do, Diana.

After Diana had left, Akko began to practice her broom riding technique. "I really wanna make Diana proud. I need to show her that I'm capable of doing this", Akko thought to herself. Everything went smoothly until the very end. Akko was feeling a bit overconfident with herself and flew higher than what Diana had instructed. All of a sudden, Akko lost her balance and fell down, hitting the ground with a loud thud. She hit her head and slowly lost conciousness. The last words that she heard before passing out were her name being called out.

Diana's PoV:
I went back, leaving Akko behind to let her practice for a bit. But, I felt a bit uneasy. I knew I should trust Akko with this, but somehow I keep getting mixed feelings about. I had a feeling that I should go back to see her. Maybe I should go back and ask her to stop? It is getting late, after all. After some time thinking, I decided to go and ask her to come with me and head back. I quickly went back and what I found shocked me. I saw Akko falling down and hit the ground hard. I can't do anything. She was too far from me. After she fell down, she didn't get back up. I quickly ran over to make sure that she is okay.

Diana: Akko, wake up, please. Akko...AKKOOOO!!!
