More than a year had passed since Griebel had died and since Yara and Natasha had had their conversation. After staying at Natasha's safe house in the Alps for a few more days, they had left again. The Avenger was on the run and Yara had decided to tag along after weighing her options. She didn't forget what Griebel had said: 'There's others like me who're going to find you.' If what he had said was true she would be safest with the Avenger who knew how to hide properly. Not that she wasn't good at it herself but it turned out there were still a few things she could learn from Natasha.

Throughout the last year and a half, they hadn't stayed in one place for more than a month. The quinjet came in very handy to travel around and Yara had probably seen and lived in more countries than she had in all of those years prior to meeting Natasha.

Yara's state, both mental and physical, had improved a lot during that time. She had more or less accepted her fate or at least the fact, that there was nothing she could change for now. Instead of dwelling on it too much, as she used to do, she took Natasha's advice and tried to make the most out of the things she had. Her nightmares often woke her up in distress in the middle of the night, but they had gotten less terrifying and less frequent.

All this time together gave the two women the opportunity to grow used to each other and get to know each other better. They had gotten closer and much more open with each other. At the same time, there were still moments when they couldn't tell what was going on in the other woman's head.

Despite that relatively newfound closeness, they hadn't shared any more intimate moments since their last one. They were companions and considered each other to be good friends. They held great respect for each other and they had forged a strong bond but at the same time, neither of them had mentioned it again.

Yara's reason for that was somewhat different than Natasha's reason. Yara was scared of it. She was, of course, worried about Natasha's reaction, but she also knew there was a very good chance that she was going to lose the Avenger sooner or later. In her mind, talking about it and potentially their relationship meant sealing that fate in some way. It didn't really make sense and she knew that, but then again, feelings and fears rarely did. Then there was also the fact, that she had never been in a relationship before.

Natasha, on the other hand, had quickly decided that the kiss had been the result of a lot of emotions and tension that had built up over a long time and didn't mean anything. She knew she was mostly trying to convince herself, but it was the only way how she could - or wanted - to explain it.

She had grown up in an environment where intimacy (if its purpose isn't seduction) and relationships weren't only frowned upon, but also presented a danger for her and her partner. The same went for any other people she cared about. Thankfully, her friends and family were mostly able to protect themselves. So was Yara. But her friends fought their own fights and made their own fair share of enemies on the way. They may have been forced into this life one way or another, but most of them have had the choice to get a way out of this and they decided to stay. Yara didn't. Her choices consisted of hiding alone and staying alive for eternity or fighting. Natasha didn't want to put her in more danger than she was already in.

Months ago, Natasha and Yara had had a conversation about what would happen if the Avenger would be called in by her former teammates. It had been a fairly short conversation since Yara had announced right away that she wanted to join the fight and help. Natasha had found herself wanting to object, but she had quickly come to the conclusion that there was no stopping Yara so she just agreed. She also had no right to tell Yara what to do and not to do. The brunette should be able to make her own choices. And most importantly, Yara knew how to defend herself and she couldn't die which would make fights less risky and dangerous for her than it was for any of her other teammates. Yara had been surprised by Natasha's lack of opposition to her statement, but she hadn't complained about it.
