Kyra knocked against the door of the tent, of course, it did not make a noise, but the fabric moved and caught the attention on the heartrender standing guard outside. He peeked in, clearly confused as to why the twins were signaling him.
Before he even had the chance to open his mouth to ask the question, Aelia flashed sunlight into his eyes and took off running, Kyra's hand in her own as they ran away from the small tent. Once they decided they had gone far enough, they had stopped, and Kyra was the first to start their conversation.
"Where want go Lia?"
"I don know. Maybe can look for flowers like when Mama took me an you look for flowers to bring to Maly when he not at home!"
"YA! YA! YA! That be fun! And can give flowers to Mama and Maly when find them!"
"Okay! Let go!" With that, Aelia took Kyra's arm and they began to walk hand in hand, looking for a bush resembling the one they had found with beautiful blossoming flowers back in Cofton with their mother.
FLASHBACK
"Kyra! Aelia! Come here please." Alina had shouted across their little flat in the boarding house, calling for her daughters. She was aware that it was not healthy for toddlers as young as them to not go outside and run around, so she decided that today, since it was Mal's birthday, she would take them out to pick flowers for him. Also the boarding house was in desperate need of some livelihood and colour.
Not one minute later, Alina had heard a quiet but fast sound coming towards her, not unlike the sound of heavy rain on a window, then she saw her daughters running towards her, smiling. It always amazed her how they could look so similar to their father, yet so very different. They had many of his features, yet there was always a laugh or look of joy present on their face, so different to seeing those same features with the expression of an unwavering stone-faced General. Alina beamed at her daughters as she knelt down to embrace them in a hug.
"How would you girls like to go pick out some flowers for Maly huh? do you girls want to go do that. We can go outside and look for a beautiful flower bush, and gift them to Maly when he gets back. How does that sound?" Their mother asked the twins.
"YA! YA! YA! YA! YAAAAAAAA!!" Kyra squealed in delight whilst Aelia yelled,
"REALLY? REALLY? REALLY MAMA? THAT SO FUN? YAY!"
Alina giggled slightly at her daughters antics, but nonetheless she took each of their hands in her palms and began walking them to the door.
They had been walking around the village square for about 15 minutes with the twins babbling to each other about different colours of flowers, things they saw in the town among other things, when Kyra had spotted a bush of flowers next to a small fountain. The flowers were bright and colourful, and when Alina looked closer, she saw that they were irises, blue irises. Her favorite flower. The whole ordeal reminded her of her daughters' father.
The fountain reminded her of the first time he took her out riding, when he first asked her to wear a black Kefta. The flowers reminded her of the winter fete, when he continued to manipulate her into thinking he really cared about her, when se was so naïve to think he cared about her. Now she knew better, now she knows all he cared about was her power. He didn't love her, he loved the idea of her.
The thought brought tears to her eyes, if everything goes according to plan, and the Darkling truly did die that day on the fold where she left him, her daughters would grow up never knowing their father.
But they would be safe.
She told herself.
They are better off this way
