Running. Run, Brielle, Run. Don't you dare look back! Why? Why were they doing this? I can't see what's in front of me, but that doesn't matter. Blurry tree leaves and branches brushed past me as I ran as fast as I could. I need to get back home! I'm not even 10 years old yet! Gabriel warned me that this would happen, but I didn't know it would happen while I'm still 8! Gabe's words flashed in my mind as I kept running through the forest away from them.
A quickly sat up in my bed on the dock, panting. That was the first memory I've had since the fight with Liam. I looked up at the sky to check the time, it was an hour before midday. We should have clocks. I'll ask Denis if he can figure that out later.
"Oh, Hey Brielle!" Claire said, walking up to me.
"Hey, Claire. How are you doing?" I asked, hopping off of my bed and slipping on my boots and gloves.
"Good. Just woke up earlier," She responded. "Oh! That's what I was trying to remember! Avery needs you over by the box," She said pointing a thumb behind her in the direction of the box.
I let out a chuckle and thanked her before heading over to the box. Avery was standing above it a little talking to a boy that looked a little older than me.
I saw Avery's eyes dart over to me as she smiled. "Brielle!" The boy looked over at me. The first thing I noticed is that he had on the same kind of gloves as I did and wore a cross necklace. He had long-ish black hair that had a small ponytail in the back. An orange fire symbol sat in the middle of his darker orange shirt. He had dark gray camouflage shorts on and plain white socks with brown tennis shoes. Dark freckles scattered themselves beneath his green eyes.
"Hey, Avery! Claire said you needed me?" I asked, though it sounded more like a statement rather than a question.
"Yeah! I need to work on the voting stage, so I figured you would help tour around Miles," Avery explained. Miles waved shyly at me.
"Sure! I'd love to do that!" I responded with a smile. Miles seemed to ease a little bit and smiled.
"Thanks! Miles, you can trust her. She'll tell you all you need know," Avery said as she waved at us both and started to walk back towards the voting stage.
Out of all the things I could have done today, giving a tour was definitely one that I didn't expect to be doing. Although, I'm glad I am giving a tour.
"Before we get started, I have to admit that I'm a bit tired because I just woke up." I said with a soft laugh.
"How'd you just wake up?" He said with a smile and an accent like Avery's.
"We hung out last night by the campfire near where my house is, and lost track of time. We basically stayed up until the sun came up and I was really tired." I explained as I started to lead him over to the garden.
"That sounds fun," He said as he followed me. He seemed like a quiet person, and I can't really blame him.
"So what all has Avery filled you in on?" I asked as he jogged to my side.
"She's told me about how she knew my name. She said it was from a bunch of names on a wall? I don't really know what she's talking about," He explained.
"Oh! Yeah, we'll stop by there shortly after you see the garden." I said.
"The garden?" He asked as we rounded the corner to the garden.
"Yeah! Here it is! It's probably one of the most peaceful places here in the Clearing," I stated with a smile.
He looked around in awe as he went over and harvested some cotton. "It's so soft!"
I laughed, "I think it's called cotton." I remembered that Avery said something about learning it from her memories.
"I like cotton," He said picking up a little bit more. I giggled at his reaction. He cleared his throat, "Sorry. Just can't remember anything and it all seems so new to me."
"It's fine. Happened to all of us, really."
"What's with the giant walls?" He asked walking over to the stone wall and placing his hand along its smooth surface.
"Right. I should probably show you," I said. "Follow me."
