Alex walked in, holding the door for Edge but never acknowledging him. Alex's hair was astray as if he had been running his hands through it, his face expressionless, his eyes exhausted. Alex took the same seat Edge was in and sighed, his head bowed in shame. She hated how he could make her feel such concern for him even after everything.

"You know, I knew things happened. You would tell me some things, you wouldn't speak about others, and I let it go." Alex took another breath before continuing. "But what happened to you yesterday? That wouldn't have happened if it weren't for me. Who knows how much wouldn't have happened if it weren't for me, especially this time. I let that reporter, who I invited, speak to you. I blamed you for the photo they dug up. I was so angry at you when I should've been angry at myself. Jade, I know it's not going to touch the pain and damage I've caused, but I'm sorry. I'm sorry for everything. I let you down."

"Yeah, you did," she confirmed. Alex nodded. "I was angry when I woke up. Angry with you, angry that those people made me feel so weak, and I vowed to become strong enough to beat them, to show them how wrong they were. I also came to another decision." Alex nodded, awaiting the words about to leave her lips. "You were the only thing that mattered to me for so long. The only real dream I had was to be yours. I loved you more than I thought possible, but I realize now that your love was conditional. The conditions of me obeying your every command. You made me feel unworthy, stupid, ugly," she turned away, not wanting to give in to her tears. "And I'm not letting you make me feel that way anymore." He continued to nod. He seemed unable to speak. "Alex, I can't be with you anymore."

"I understand," Alex sniffed and turned his head to hide the tears in his eyes. "You deserve someone who reminds you of how special you are every day, and apparently, I'm not brave enough to be that person." Jade didn't add anything to the conversation. He continued. "Also, I'm not going to let you go through that process again of waiting for your arm to heal. I'm going to pay for the healing auras you need to heal quicker. I'll talk to the nurses on my way out." Alex took a deep breath. "I wish I could stop this from happening, but reporters will probably be watching you for a bit. They're going to want to know what happened. If you don't want to talk to them, say 'no comment,' but I understand if you want to tell them everything."

Jade was relieved she didn't have to ask for the orbs and that he offered them on his own accord. She hated how her heart throbbed for him, both with love and sympathy. Still, even after everything, it remained the weakest part of her. "I wouldn't do anything to hurt your career, Alex. Remember, they can make up their own stories, and we will continue to know the truth."

He gave her a weak smile and stood up. "Amelia is getting her room set up for you to stay with her while they fix your room." He crossed to her and kissed her forehead. "I've always loved you, Jade. I'm sorry I didn't know what to do with that love." Alex crossed to the door, giving her one last look before leaving. In a few minutes, he transformed her fury into heartbreak. Jade hadn't expected him to realize the harm he caused, but now, he put her before himself. Something she should've done the moment Edge walked into her life the first time.
