Alex dried his hair with a towel, letting another towel be the only thing to cover him as he came out of the shower. Jade was face-deep in a book. Alex frowned, wishing he could grab her attention. Alex smirked as an idea came to him. "Must be a good book," he said, waking her from her trance. She looked over to reply, froze, and turned away. "What's wrong?" Her face turned crimson. He crossed over to her and leaned over, and kissed her. He could feel the tremble as his wet body pressed against her. Pulling away from her, he smirked as her eyes stared with desire. Alex crossed over towards the closet, leaving her bothered as he dressed. "So, are you ready for your first day of wielding?" She nodded, remaining silent. He dressed, taking his time buttoning his shirt. Jade chewed on her fingernail, trying to hide her longing stares. "Enjoying the view?
"What?" Jade cleared her throat, obviously lost in a trance. "Oh, I-. You're making me lose my words."
"Oh? Why's that?" Her breathing grew heavier as he crossed over to her. Her lips parted as he closed the space between them. He slowly brought his mouth towards her, she desperately tried to reach it, but he taunted her with his slow pace.
"Stop teasing me," Jade whimpered under his touch.
"What do you mean?" He asked innocently. "Is there something you want?" She blushed. He couldn't help but smile. She opened her mouth to speak, but she was too embarrassed. He relieved her from his teasing and kissed her. She pulled him closer to her, unable to keep her hand off him. He picked her up and carried her back to the bed.
"I can't wait to get this damn cast off, so I can wrap my arms around you," she whispered. Alex's eyes shone at the comment.
"Only three more days," Alex enthused, "but for now," he kissed her. "I'll just have to take the reigns, hm?" Jade nodded as her breaths became heavier when he pressed against her. Her eyes widened, and she sat up straight. Alex pulled back and looked around. "Jade? What is it?"
"Did you hear that?" Alex looked around, trying to listen for the sound. "Alex, I heard a voice." On that cue, Alex stood up, holding his hands in front of him as he searched the room. He returned to the starting position when he confirmed no one was there. "I heard it, Alex. I swear."
"I believe you, but no one is in this room. What did it say?"
"I-. To enjoy it while I last."
"Wait, while you last, or it lasts?"
"You."
"You know it's been a busy week, and you've undergone a lot lately. I'm sure it's okay, and you're probably just tired." She nodded. "Maybe we should just skip class today?"
"No, I can't. I've missed too much. As you said, I'm probably just tired. I'm going to go get ready." Her smile disappeared, and she fumbled to put her stuff in her bag as she readied for class. His heart became heavy as he watched her. Hating how much fear took her over. She needed to realize she belonged here, but it was hard to convince her of something that he wasn't sure he truly believed either. "Maybe I'm finally cracking," she said, her voice low. "All the damage they did to me, maybe I've finally broken." Alex frowned and crossed over to her, but she didn't meet his gaze. She wore her wounds as humiliation instead of the hurt they should cause.
"You're not, Jade." He struggled to comfort her further. Maybe some of this was paranoia, and perhaps it still had something to do with the pain he caused her. The moment they get closer, she pulls away, anything was possible, but Jade hearing a non-existent voice seemed the least likely scenario. Her head bowed. She probably needed more than he gave her, but what could he say? A knock at the door meant it was time to head to class. Alex crossed over to let Joe in.
"Are you okay?" Joe asked, noticing Jade's expression. As soon as Joe crossed to her, Jade's performance started. A quick change in expression, a smile, and a believable excuse.
"Of course, sorry, I was lost in thought. Should we head out?" She glanced at Alex before heading out the door. Joe quickly followed her. He couldn't tell if he angered her, if he hurt her, or if she didn't want to acknowledge it any further. She could be a lot to keep up with, especially with the number of secrets she held. Alex hoped keeping up with it all would be worth it. They stopped in front of his classroom.
"I'll see you after class, okay?" Alex said. Jade nodded and continued with Joe. Alex stopped when he noticed a guy looking behind him. Alex followed his gaze, which led directly to Jade. His face was seemingly in shock from seeing her. "There a reason you're staring at my girlfriend?"
"What?" The guy shook his head and turned to Alex. "Oh, Alex, right?"
"Yes, who are you?"
"That doesn't matter." He glanced back once more and turned around to entire the same class as Alex. He took his seat at the back of the course, likely why Alex hadn't noticed him before. The man had dark brown eyes, black hair brushed to one side, and spent plenty of time in the gym. His expression seemed saddened. Who was this guy, and how did he know Jade? Alex sighed and got up, crossing to the back of the class and taking a seat next to him. "Look, you have nothing to worry about, so just let it go."
"Who are you?"
"I'm Edge," he introduced. Alex's stomach sank, and a heavy feeling started in his chest. "I knew Jade in Inanis, and we were friends.
"Pretty sure you were more than that, hm?"
"Did she tell you about me?" His eyes widened, and a glimmer of hope crossed him. Alex grimaced, wanting to shatter it.
"She told me how she rejected you to be available for me." Edge turned away. His expression was heartbroken, Alex knew he shouldn't rub salt in his wounds, but he didn't go through all of this with Jade to just let her fall back into Edge's arms.
"Right," Edge sighed, pulling out his books. Edge turned his attention away from Alex, hoping to end the conversation. Edge started to make notes in one of the books he pulled out. Alex's eyes widened, recognizing the book as one of Jade's Herbology books.
"She gave you that book?"
Edge looked up at him, "she knew I was trying to catch up on studying medicinal gardening, so she let me use the first volume of his Herbology series. I didn't intend to keep it, but, well, she didn't show up when I left, so."
"Well, you should probably see she gets it, that's her favorite author, and I got that book for her." Edge shut the book and placed it on Alex's desk before picking up his stuff and moving seats. Alex rolled his eyes. The dramatics were starting to annoy him. Between Jade's constant mood swings and now all the suitors who want nothing more than to take his Serf away, he wasn't sure how much more he could take. Alex stepped out of the room for a moment to place a call to his agent. "Yeah, just send him to the courtyard."
