Jade stood up straight, holding her stomach to steady her breathing. She needed to keep her composure and avoid raising concerns for Amorio or Craig. They deserved time alone without the weight of her drama. Her immediate bags were packed by the door, alongside Alex's. She handed Craig a note with detailed instructions for her garden.
"What, I can't do it?" Amorio scoffed, pretending to be offended.
"Craig, don't let him near it," Jade said, laughing. She caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror. Her face had healed, but scars peeked through the exposed areas of her clothing. Her arm remained in a cast, and the bruises around her wrist were still evident.
"Okay!" Craig exclaimed, pulling out another large bag. "Inside are three soup containers, and in here are your injections, pills, and—" Amorio interrupted him by placing a hand on his shoulder.
"I think they got it," Amorio smiled, laughing at Craig's paternal instincts.
"Okay," Craig said, taking a breath to calm his worry. He handed the bag to Alex, who was already struggling with the four he was carrying.
"Alex, could you give us a moment?" Jade asked.
"Yeah, I'll load these on the train," Alex said through clenched teeth, balancing the bags as he crossed outside.
"Thank you. I love you both so much," Jade said, turning to Amorio and Craig. They embraced her. When they pulled apart, she looked between them and chuckled. "Also, you guys don't have to keep pretending around me. I figured it out a while ago." Both their faces turned red. "Having two dads, I think I can handle that." Jade kissed each of their cheeks and started toward the door. She paused in the doorway and turned back. "Thank you for saving me." They both placed their hands over their hearts and extended their hands back to her, a gesture they made together when she was younger. She returned it and shut the door behind her.
Jade caught up to Alex and stopped when he pulled a rose from behind his back and handed it to her. She smirked and took it. "My lady," he teased, offering his hand and helping her onto the train. "Are you ready?"
"Yeah," she nodded, "I think I am."
They made their way to their cabin and shut the door behind them. Their early morning departure left them both exhausted, and they dozed off almost as soon as the train started moving. Jade was the first to wake up about an hour later. She smiled at the sight of Alex beside her. Sitting up, his jacket slid off her, and she picked it up, looking at him. Her eyes teared up as warmth overwhelmed her. Her heart raced as she reached toward his face, but his eyes opened, startling her.
"Morning," Alex said with a chuckle. "Was I interrupting something?" She blushed. He smirked and sat up, turning toward her. His eyes studied hers as his hands began brushing through her hair. She shut her eyes, giving in to the soothing touch. "You're so beautiful, Jade," he whispered, kissing her cheek. She blushed, his blue eyes captivating her when she opened her eyes. "If you keep looking at me like that, I'll have to pinch myself to see if I'm dreaming."
"Stop," she teased, turning away from his gaze. Her eyes slowly returned to his but were distracted by the landscape outside the window. "Such a beautiful kingdom we live in," Jade whispered. She turned back to him. "I bet traveling, you saw the most beautiful places."
"Nothing compares to you," he replied. She smiled. A silence passed before Alex changed the topic. "So, Amorio and Craig?"
"They think I wasn't aware?" They both laughed. "I'm glad, though. It comforts me to know he's not alone, and it comforts me to know I'm not." Alex squeezed her knee in agreement. "Alex, I'm sorry for the things I said."
