Chapter Thirty-Five - Intentions

Jade sipped her coffee, staring blankly at the space in front of her. Her eyes moved up as Topaz walked in. He glanced over her and poured himself a cup before joining her at the table. Topaz's eyes were gentle as he waited for some explanation for her red face and saddened expression. Jade sighed and set the cup down.

"Edge proposed to me a year ago," she proclaimed. Topaz's eyebrows rose. "I turned him down because, well." Jade took a deep breath. "Because of Alex."

"You must've been swept up by Alex then." Jade nodded. "What happened?"

"I wrote Alex letters for three years, including when I was with Edge. I told Edge that I wasn't over him and wasn't sure what I could offer in a relationship. I did fall for Edge, but my heart's nagging for Alex overwhelmed me more than Edge's love. So, when he told me to meet him at the train station, I knew what he would ask. Instead of facing him, I didn't show. Edge left knowing how much of a coward I was and knowing where he stood in my heart."

"Alex must've had you wrapped around his fingers for that kind of reaction."

"Alex was the first Arc ever to show me kindness. We were together all the time as kids. Never with an official title, but there wasn't any question that we were each other's person. Then he left for his tour. My answers went unanswered, and I foolishly made excuses for him. He broke my heart at the Omega Ceremony, but still, I gave him a chance. I wish I never did. Alex and I ran our course, and then Edge came out of nowhere. He swept me up, but he is still worried about my intentions with Alex."

"I did notice Alex's glances at you, but I'm disappointed to hear that Edge is that untrusting of you."

"I just haven't earned his trust back, I guess," Jade frowned, staring into her cup. Topaz placed his hand on her shoulder, and she looked up and smiled at him.

"Jade, you're truly perfect, you know that? Your heart is too pure for your good, but being a guy myself. I can tell you that Edge's desire for you will outweigh the past." Topaz and Jade looked up as footsteps came towards them, Edge smiling when meeting their gaze. "I'm going to go into my office."

Edge sat beside Jade and frowned. "Jade, I'm sorry." Her eyes lit up as he looked at her. "I let my jealousy get the better of me last night. I don't want to ruin this because of what happened back on Inanis. I know your eyes were on me, and you were the one who was honest about Alex's eyes on you. I thought I had let it all go, but apparently, there may still be some wounds I haven't checked." Jade smiled as he looked up at her. "Can you forgive me?" She nodded and leaned over to kiss him. A sigh of relief escaped them both. "I never want to make those beautiful eyes of yours cry again."

"It's okay, Edge. I think maybe it was a good thing you got it all out. If we want to make this work, we should've addressed all the untapped feelings we ignored. I hurt you, and that's that. I'm just glad we can keep trying to make this work. Jade whispered. "I want nothing more than to be yours."

Edge stood up and helped Jade to a stance. His eyes were focused on her and only her. She smiled as he bent down to kiss her. Jade opened her eyes and saw Alex watching her saddened in the doorway, but she didn't acknowledge it. Alex left, and the exchange they had just now would remain between them. Edge laced her hands in his and led her out back so they could enjoy the crisp air around them. Jade sighed longingly at Edge, but there was a sinking feeling in her stomach, even with her heart captivated. The last time she ignored angered feelings directed at her, Alex and her ended their relationship with a catastrophic ending. All she hoped was this time would be different.
