Chapter Thirty-One - William

Alex entered his father's office and met with his father's finger raising at him as he approached. William finished his call and turned his attention to Alex. Alex's father, William, was one of Findere's most influential people. Being the direct Assistant to the Enlightened posed a lot of pressure for Alex, a pressure that kept him and Jade apart in the first place. His father, William, was the strongest water-wielder in the kingdom, followed by Alex and Alex's younger half-brother, Brian. William wore an immaculate navy suit. He did not wear royal jewelry like the Enlightened. Still, as Assistant to the Enlightened, he did bare many rings representing different alliances worldwide. William's white hair was pulled back and fell straight down his back. His bright blue eyes stared at Alex's matching ones.

"Yes, son? I was told this was urgent?"

'Dad, um. Have you heard anything about the Enlightened taking in a student from Omega 5 today?"

William looked up at him, perplexed. He pulled a notebook out of his desk and rummaged through it. "I do not see any notes about a visit to Omega 5. Where did you hear such a thing?"

"Well, I didn't hear about it. It happened. This morning, the Enlightened came to our classes, and the Enlightened took Jade." Alex watched his father's face fall, and the expression surprised Alex. He looked at his father, perplexed. "Do you know something about that?"

"Well, no, but I have been in meetings the whole day," William said, gathering his stuff. "He took Jade, you say? Do you have any idea why?"

'Well," Alex cleared his throat and rubbed the back of his head. "Potentially because Jade may have multiple abilities?"

"We're talking about the same Jade? The wide-eyed little Alex-obsessed girl from Inanis?"

"She's a lot more than that," Alex challenged.

" Yes, yes, but her, right?" Alex nodded. "Well, come on. If he has her, then they're here." William stood up, and Alex followed close behind as they maneuvered out of his office and through the castle. He stopped to talk with one of the other Enlightened council members, "have you seen the Enlightened?"

"Yes, he and some young girl are out on the battlefields."

"Thank you, Erin," William proceeded, his posture perfect as he walked through the castle like we would his own home. He pushed the double doors open, Alex quickening his pace to keep up with him. The walk from the castle's back doors to the battlefield was a surprisingly long one, but once they got there, he could see why. The battlefields stretched on for miles in every direction. They made it to the top of the hill, and they saw both the Enlightened and Jade practicing. Alex watched as her aura lit in various colors. Her smile was wide as the Enlightened's as he showed her different movement techniques. Jade touched the ground, and hundreds of flowers grew from her touch. His heart raced. It was the most magnificent thing he'd ever seen. His eyes met hers, her expression mixed between confusion and concern.

"Oh, William, Alex, what do we owe the pleasure?" the Enlightened asked, crossing over to meet them. Jade walked behind him. Alex watched as Jade's demeanor shifted with his father's presence.

"Well, I only heard about the castle's unique visitor from my son." William bowed his head, "Jade."

"Mr. Caldwell," Jade said, lowering her head. Her body trembled, and Alex hated how his father caused her to react.

"So you're acquainted?" the Enlightened asked, looking between all of them. "Jade, head up," the Enlightened commanded. Alex watched as Jade raised her head, but her eyes avoided his father's.

"Well, Jade lived in Inanis with us before Alex left for tour and Preliminary. " William pointed to Jade and Alex. The two of them "were involved." William said. Alex grimaced at the emphasis he used, unsure of how he meant it to sound.
