Chapter Fifteen - Alex's Script

Professor Q. crossed behind Jade, "good Jade, plant your feet firmly. It's important to practice your breathing. Deep breath in, and then when you exhale, focus your energy on your gemstone, bring that ability forward." Jade mimicked his instructions, taking a deep breath. She released slowly, feeling the warmth surging through her. Opening her eyes, she could see a green aura flowing around her. Spirals of green danced around her like a ribbon caught in the air. Raising her good hand, she focused the energy on the gemstone, the aura circling her wrist and coming forth in her hand. Her smile widened. "Perfect, Jade. Very well done," Professor Q. boasted. "Now, make it travel around the room." Jade moved her hand in gentle strokes, watching the green aura flow around the room, her eyes illuminated by the bright green aura that distracted the class from their own energy. Jade smiled, feeling a sense of warmth she had never experienced as it returned, encircling her. The calming sounds of nature filled her ears. She closed her eyes, feeling relaxed as it returned to her through her gemstone.

"Why was hers so bright?" Amelia asked, turning to Professor Q. Jade looked around at the wide-eyed expressions of the rest of her classmates, realizing maybe her ability wasn't quite as normal as she expected.

"Some abilities harness more energy than others, and it also varies on the person and the strength of an aura they can carry," Professor Q. explained.

"Jade has a physical defect at the moment," Amelia stated, gesturing to the cast, "so you're saying, even with that, Jade's energy is stronger than the rest of us?"

"Today is not about measuring energy, nor strength," he explained. "Today is about introducing your bodies to your new aura. Amelia turned, annoyed at Professor Q.'s comments. Jade frowned.

"Are you upset with me?" Jade questioned, turning to Amelia.

"No, not for any reason that makes sense. Sorry, I practice constantly, and, well. No offense, but you're so new to it," Amelia explained.

"I'm sorry," Jade replied.

No, no, don't be. I shouldn't be acting that way," Amelia sighed, "we need to encourage each other. There is no room for jealousy. I should be the one who's sorry, Jade." Amelia reached out and squeezed her hand, and returned to her practicing. Jade smiled, watching as Amelia's aura swirled around her. Jade looked around the class. Amelia was right. None of these auras were as bright as hers, but how could that be? She had to be the least experienced in the group. She never anticipated having an ability. How could it be that hers was so naturally bright?

The bell sounded. "Okay, everyone, great work today! Remember to take it easy for a bit. Even though we didn't cast our abilities, drawing an aura can also take some energy from us. See you in class tomorrow."

"I'm going to head to my room for some extra practice," Amelia explained. "I'll see you tomorrow?" Jade nodded, waving to Amelia as she left.

Joe and Jade walked from the classroom and towards Alex's. "That was rather impressive," he said, breaking the silence. "Seems like you do something that makes you more unique every day?" She smiled, not knowing what to say in response to something like that. Alex walked out of his class and started towards them. "Hang on, I'll be right back," Joe said, stepping away. Jade's eyes widened seeing Edge cross out of the room behind Alex. Alex turned to see where her gaze was. She started forward, a million questions flooding her head, but Alex held his hand out in front of her. She turned to him, an irritated expression across his face.

"Don't," he commanded. Jade's eyes darted down. "Here's your book. Maybe don't give out gifts next time?" Alex shoved the book into her chest. She placed her bag down and grabbed it obediently. She didn't meet Alex's gaze as she pushed it into her bag.
