Chapter 4. Manipulation

"Ethan calm down" Coaxed Karen

"Why? Am I lying? You still have the gut to ask me for a gift. You very lucky to have mum and dad or else, I would have killed you with my own hands" He said and stood up to leave. When he was at the door, he instructed coldly for no one to follow him.

The room fell in an awkward silence and Kenneth started fidgeting with the hem of his dress nervously and the all glanced at Altagracia whom they thought will ask questions.

Olivia suddenly flew into rage and pointed her finger at Altagracia.

"It's all your fault, if you hadn't appeared, he would have never lashed at Kenneth like that" She said and stormed out of the kitchen. They were all flabbergasted. Karen smiled embarrassed and asked.

"Who wants more pancakes?"-silence- "Nobody?"-silence- "Okay"

"Grace, let's go" said Devon standing up and fixing his tie and Altagracia followed suit.

"Yes dad. Thank you for the breakfast Karen."

"You're welcome dear "

They both walked out and entered his car. On the way, he decided to start a conversation.

"So you decided to follow the business specialty?"

"I'm done with it"

"Oh, well, then how was your first job, not too difficult I hope"

"No" She answered. At least not until they snatch my mother's company while you left us.

"What's your favorite attraction, mine is the bungee jump, and yours?"

"Never went for an attraction" She said trying to discourage him.

"Ever had a boyfriend? "

"What are all these questions about?" She asked and he sighed.

"Sorry, I just realise I can't make it up to you despite my efforts, I'll stop pestering you"

A pang of guilt weighed on her heart and when Devon took a look at her expression, he started rejoicing in his heart, but maintained the facade of a dejected father.

"Never had a boyfriend, the only job I had was in Chill Co. In which my mother invested everything. It's a storage company and she planned on handing the general managerial position to me once I reach twenty-five. Unfortunately, she fell sick and some of her partners snatched the company in which she had invested all her energy in" She narrated and he smiled.

She gave him a weapon to convince her into marrying that guy and respecting the deadline. He just had to lay the trap.

"Good. I mean not the fact you were fired or your mother's company was snatched, but instead, I have a job offer for you. Be the general manager of one of my companies."

"Dad, I can't..."

"Don't think that because you're my daughter that I'm giving you this job, it's because I have total confidence in you" He said and that statement alone stroke the end of the resistance she had towards him. He would never give her a managerial position.

He had a dozen of LA based companies so it was quite a long travel. He introduced her to everyone as his beloved daughter. Soon the evening came and he received a call.

"Grace, I'll have to leave. See you at dinner. Also, we are going to talk in details about Barbara's treatment. Ethan is going to come pick you up" He said and drove away. Less than two minutes later, a red Maserati parked in front of her.

"Your driver is here princess" He said and she smiled climbing in his car.

"So how was it? "

"It was fun, dad took his time to explain the role of every company and even how important they were to our family" She said and he smirked. "What? Do I have something on the face?"

"No, just that you said 'our family'" He said and she blushed.

"To your family"

"No it's our family now" He said and they both laughed a little before the car fell into silence.

"He forced himself on her" He said with clenched jaws. She wanted to ask who, when she realised he was staring at the picture of a beautiful petite blondie with brown eyes. She must be his girlfriend.

"It was three years ago. I had just find myself the girl with whom I wanted to spend the rest of my life. Hannah was everything I wanted and even more. It was always fun to be with her, so I brought her home. Mum liked her immediately. She even teased Kenneth that he didn't find a wife while I was already planning my marriage. He said in return that I didn't know how to have fun.

We spent a week before going back to Atlanta. But when we were back, she became distant and started finding excuses not to come with me back here. One day, when I tried to speak with her, she lashed at me and told me that Kenneth had forced himself on her. I refused to believe her and we broke up, but I asked him just to be sure and he told me she had offered herself to him several times and that he couldn't just decline when she was so insistent."

"But she was your girlfriend!" Altagracia exclaimed and he simply chuckled sadly.

"He didn't care. Now that I told you about me, it's your turn"

"I never agreed on such a deal with you" She said and he chuckled.

"Tell me when you're ready. Do you know how to drive?" He asked and I shook my head.

"Yep, I even have a purple car"

"I don't trust your words so once I'll be back, this big brother of yours will teach you" He said and she giggled.

"Since when are you my big brother?"

"Since I'm a year older than you little one"

"I'm not little, you... I'm at loss of word to qualify you" She said faking exasperation and he laughed. "You mentioned when you'll be back, where are you going to?"

"Do you think the Parker's business in Florida will manage themselves. I just came to take a look at my little sister. Altagracia Yelena Parker. Yelena is really pretty, Italian?"

"Russian. My mother is really inspired"

"From now on, I'll call you Yelena"

"Nobody calls me like that"

"Exactly" He said with a grin. Soon they reached home and got out to see Olivia shouting at some random guy.

"Leave this place" She screamed and he walked away.

"Don't ever call me again you psycho" Altagracia was surprised to see Ethan walking away without paying them any attention.

"You're not intervening? " She asked and he shrugged.

"I'm tired of doing so" He said and walk into the kitchen to see Karen cooking the dinner.

"It's actually the fifty seventh time they are doing this. We should think about moving Olivia out of this house"She said with a tired sigh and Altagracia gaped at the duo. Kenneth was in the corner tapping on his phone.

Just then Devon came in a sat as if he didn't hear the commotion outside. How bad is Olivia's behavior that they don't even care?
