Chapter 20. Explanation

Altagracia was forced to go with Elijah since there were some etiquette to follow like having a luxury car with a driver. She wore a yellow evening dress with her hair tied in a low bun and a nude makeup.

"Okay, I don't know you, you don't know me" She said and walked away leaving him dumbfounded.

Soon enough, she disappeared from his sight and soon found business men with whom to conclude a partnership in the near future.

Many businessmen admired her eloquent speech, the ease with which she glides through every topic. It was difficult to believe she was just twenty-two years old, not to mention her beauty. She had turned down countless men showing them her rings, but some insisted that she could cheat on her husband and he wouldn't know. Few people knew that Elijah Hales was actually married and those who knew didn't know the bride's face since the ceremony was very private and only relatives who were there at that moment attended the marriage.

"Mrs. Hales, you're really stunning" Said the guy she saw in Elijah's office who was no other than Steffen.

"Thanks, but I don't remember you telling me you name"

"Steffen Brookes. A pleasure to speak to you atlas"

"Oh, and what did you want to speak with me?"

"Your husband" he answered and her face immediately became sullen.

"Oh, are you his friend?"

"His best friend actually"

"Let me guess, you want to tell me my husband is a good guy and that he just behaves like a bipolar jerk because he has been hurt or something of the sort, right?" She said and he winced.

"It's pretty close"

"Then let me tell you something and sorry in advance if I'm rude but we are not in a novel here where the asshole becomes a docile pussycat at the end of the book. Good guys don't judge and insult people without knowing their reasons for accepting a deal. " She said and walked away.

More than three hours had passed and she wanted to go back home and kiss Amelia goodnight. She had been holding a glass of wine throughout the evening as she walked towards a waiter to put the glass on his tray, when she saw a familiar figure cornering a woman.

Steffen was actually running after Altagracia to try and convince her. He actually felt they were a match made in heaven and had to give each other a chance. But then he saw her frozen on a spot and followed her line of sight to see Elijah in a corner with a redhead. The same one he spoke with the night they went for drinks.

She noticed Steffen and smiled bitterly at him before pointing at her husband.

"That's your good guy Steffen" She said and gave him her glass.

"I'm sure he has his..."

"Reason? You are his best friend, you'll always be on his side. But trust me, I don't feel any other emotion than pure disgust" She said and left the hall to the parking where their driver and their body guards were parked.

"Ma'am, where is Mr Hales?"

"Like I know. Start that car, we are leaving " She said and the bodyguard looked behind her.

"Mr Hales is not..."

"Mierda, if you are not starting this car now, I'm taking a cab, there is no way I'm going to stay here a minute longer, your choice" She said and the reluctantly opened the door for her and a few minutes later they were gone.

On the other hand, immediately after Altagracia left, Steffen immediately walked towards his friend. He was about to speak when he heard.

"... And for your information, my wife is the best woman I've ever laid my hands on. You don't hold a candle to her. Stop the nonsense you started or else, I'll make your life a living hell" He said sternly and the woman seemed about to faint from fear. She scurried away like a mice and Elijah looked at the time on his watch.

"Were is that woman again, it's getting late" He asked himself and noticed Steffen sighing like a tired father.

"Guy, get ready for your first real fight with your wife" He said and Elijah frowned.

"Wait, what are you talking about?"

"She saw you cornering that redhead and misinterpreted everything"

"Was she jealous?"

"She told me she felt disgusted. You judge her and later do this" He answered and he sighed.

"I have to find her" They searched for her in the whole room before hearing she left and when they arrived the parking lot, his car was nowhere to be seen. Elijah sighed.

"I'll drop you" Said Steffen and the walked towards his car. On the way, Elijah was incredibly nervous but didn't know why. It was annoying.

Was he actually nervous about telling the truth to his wife? Again he usually wouldn't care but he couldn't dissuade himself from explaining.

Few minutes later, Steffen parked in front of the gate and then Elijah walked in. He surprised to see his wife in his daughter's room turning off the lights. She was ready to storm away when he caught her arm and whispered to her.

"We have to speak"

"I don't have anything to tell you, let go" She whispered yelled. He closed the door of his daughter room after kissing her forehead and left to find his wife actually trying to leave with a pillow and a blanket.

"Where do you think you are going?" He asked but she didn't even spare him a glance. "Let me explain"

"Why did you marry me?" She asked and added "Don't tell me it's because your grandfather ordered because I won't believe you" She said and he ran a hand through his hair.

"Tell me, you just wanted someone to humiliate, insult and bully, you judged me without hearing what I had to say, huh? What do you know about me to be disgusted? Just rumors. You never had a tangible proof or see me doing immoral things. Dios mio , and then you did exactly what you were disgusted about, so now tell me, who doesn't merit the other's respect? " She asked and walked away leaving him in their room. He was stunned. He hadn't realized he was doing all this.

He was used to being cruel to anyone who wasn't a relative but he actually forgot that a wife is the most cherished relative. No he didn't forget, just that he didn't even want to try. And the worse was that despite she was angry, he still wanted to wait for his investigator results.
