ERYK'S POV:

"Cody." I tugged on his arm, shaking his shoulder in the process. "Up, up, up."

Having late nights for most of his life, Cody always was a heavy sleeper because sleep was scarce when living with Jeff. There could be a hurricane outside, and he would barely flinch while he was asleep.

"Huh?" He groaned, his head lifting from his pillow, but his eyes remained shut.

"It's time for school, you need to get dressed and go downstairs for breakfast."

Slowly opening his eyes, flinching as soon as he realized the bedroom light was on, he glanced at his alarm clock to make sure I didn't wake him up a minute before his alarm was scheduled to ring.

"School is next week Eryk," He rolled over, pulling the covers over his head. "go back to bed."

"No." I pulled the entire blanket off him, throwing it onto my bed knowing that he'd be too tired to get up and get it. "School is this week, so let's go." I gave him a light smack on the shoulder.

"Just go...I'll skip breakfast." He shooed me away.

"Not an option Cody, it's the most important meal of the day and you know you're cranky as hell when you don't eat."

"Ugh alright, alright, I'm up." He leaned forward, stretching his arms over his head. "Why the hell are you so wide awake? You start next week."

I went to his closet and pulled out his book bag, trying to make this as swift as possible.

"I got up to walk you to school."

Since the elementary and high school were connected in our old town, I've been walking him to school since he began first grade. We were lucky enough to have it the same way in this town, but soon I won't be able to do it anymore.

"Charlie is making me take the bus since you'll be leaving."

"But I don't leave until next week, so this week..." I shrugged. "you're stuck with me."

He nodded, slowly gathering his thoughts together as he bundled everything he needed. We packed his bookbag last night and I gave him a rundown of the Junior High side, but it was probably too much for him to remember. After slowly, emphasis on slowly, getting dressed, we walked downstairs in silence, our stomachs growling and ready to chow-down on anything Charlie put in front of us.

Lucky for us, it was pancakes and eggs.

"Good morning, ready for today?" He asked Cody, flipping some extra pancakes onto his plate.

"I guess so, at least I'll see Greg."

"You haven't seen him in a while, you should invite him over for a weekend sometime." Charlie said nicely, passing me the ketchup for my eggs.

"I'll ask him about that." Cody nodded and began dowsing his pancakes in syrup.

"Why are you up so early?" Charlie turned to me.

"Oh, I'm going to walk Cody to school."

Charlie smiled, exchanging glances between us, and nodded. "That's good, thank you for that."

"No problem."

"Do both of you have your house keys? With my new work schedule, I should always be here when you get done with school but just in case..." Charlie looked to him.

"I have mine."

I showed mine since my mouth was full of eggs and bacon.

"Alright good." He nodded and began eating.
