ERYK'S POV:

I've been texting Natalie nonstop since I got home. I even snuck my phone between my legs at the dinner just so I could continue talking to her about her trip to the lake this weekend. Charlie snapped at me though because he said the dinner table was family-time only.

"You could come with us if you wanted to." Natalie replied.

"You sure? Do you think your family would mind?"

I looked up at Charlie but he was listening to Cody talk about his history exam today and how ingenious he was for figuring out this one question about the Pilgrims.

"Well it really will just be my brother and his girlfriend. We usually take this trip every summer and I'm always allowed to bring friends." My phone vibrated.

I tried to ignore the fact that she called me a friend but then I noticed that Charlie's attention was directly on me.

"Give me your phone."

"But Charlie, I'm doing something important!" I exclaimed immediately.

"Eryk." He raised his eyebrows at me.

I muted my phone under the table so he couldn't see any of the messages, but unwillingly gave it to him.

"Who are you texting?"

"Just a friend of mine." I swirled my peas on the plate.

"His girlfriend." Cody smiled at me.

"Shut up!"

"Girlfriend?" Charlie turned back to me and glanced down at my phone. "Eryk, you didn't tell me about this."

"She's not my girlfriend...she's just a girl that I know from class and someone that I happen to like." I sneered at Cody.

Charlie nodded his head like he knew exactly what I was talking about but Cody just smirked away at me.

"Regardless of who it is, it's really disrespectful to text at the table and not engage in the conversation."

"Yes sir." I sat back in my chair and sighed.

"Cody continue." He turned back to Cody.

Cody went on about the rest of his exams but I tuned them both out and started thinking about Natalie and her soft skin. She was so sweet during our tutoring sessions and she had a great sense of humor. I just can't believe I never noticed her before then.

If I get the chance to go to the lake with her this weekend, I'm definitely going to try to convince her to go out with me before school starts. We only have a month and, well I know that seems like a lot of time, but I want everything to be set for when classes start.

"Eryk, are you listening to me?" Charlie asked.

"No, sorry. What did you say?" I snapped out of my strategic day-dream.

"I said," he stopped and shot me an irritated look. "we're going to do something special for your birthday tomorrow so I'm going to pick you and Cody up from school after your last classes."

"Okay cool, thanks."

"Cody are you finished with dinner?" His expression never left mine.

"Yeah, can I be excused?" He asked nicely.

"Yes, go on."

Cody stood up and took his plate and cup to the kitchen before he ran off upstairs. Charlie looked down at my plate and noticed that I barely touched my food, which I know is unusual for me, but it was something that I feel is building onto his anger.
